Hall ) made the ofcial selection of January's Frostbite Online Film Festival. [ 1 ] Te screendance collaboration Being Together recently screened at Austin Community College’s annual fundraiser. [ 2 ] On February 27-29, Ana Baer and Christa Oliver produced Merge X at the Patti Strickel Harrison Teatre. Shay Ishii's Dance Company presented A Moment at the Rollins Teatre of the Long Center on February 7-8. Te concert featured the choreography of Shay Ishii , Amanda McCorkle , Kaysie Seitz Brown and Katherine Duke . Dance faculty Kaysie Seitz Brown , Misti Galvan , Amanda McCorkle , Michelle Nance , LeAnne Smith and Nicole Wesley performed in the concert along with Alumna Samantha Furry and several current Texas State Dance majors. Christa Oliver presented her research and performance project "Bearing Witness through Dance: A Response to the Crisis at the Texas-Mexico Border" at the Northeast Modern Language Association's 51st Annual Convention. For her scholarly/creative work, Christa was selected to be the recipient of the Department Achievement Award. Christa collaborated with New York-based costume designer, Marissa L. Menezes, Austin-based custom clothing brand, FLAVNT Streetwear, Dr. Jonathan Babcock , and ffty singers from Texas State University's Choral Department on her lastest choreographic project, Ache, Grieve, Yearn, Love . Te piece premiered during Merge Dance Company's 10th-anniversary concert at the Patti Strickel Harrison Teatre. On February 20, Kaysie Seitz Brown's dance company CIM TEYA was invited to participate in Crockett Elementary's Family Literacy Night where they guided children to create movement and dance and then performed for the children and their loved ones at the end of the evening. On March 2-3, CIM TEYA performed their program Stream in Motion 6.0 in the Performing Arts Center for approximately 600 San Marcos ISD 2nd graders, their teachers and staf with lighting design by lecturer Scott Vandenberg. CIM TEYA also premiered their new work, a hip-hop piece about the efects of social media on society titled FOMO , choreographed by dance major Victoria Guice . On March 6, CIM TEYA performed at Voigt Elementary Arts Integration Academy in Round Rock where CIM TEYA Alumna Rebekah Balli now teaches. WECreate Spaces: Barriers (a live multidisciplinary collaboration with choreographers/dancers Kaysie Seitz Brown , Michelle Nance , and Nicole Wesley and set and light designer Cheri Prough DeVol ), premiered during Merge X . Tis piece is part of the site-specifc exploration called WECreate Spaces . Directed by Ana Baer and Heike Salzer and produced by WECreate Productions. [ 3] Nicole Wesley coordinated the Texas Association for Teachers in Dancing (TATD) mini convention at Jowers Center in January. It allowed dance students to take master classes with dance studio owners. She attended the 2020 Texas Dance Educators Association (TDEA) conference in Houston. Nicole performed the work Alluvial Bed choreographed by Katherine Duke in Shay Ishii's Dance Company’s A Moment at the Long Center in February and performed in Ana Baer’s WECreate Spaces: Barriers at the Harrison Teatre as part of Merge Dance Company’s concert entitled Merge X . Nicole's Wimberley Dance Elite opened their fourth studio, the Performance + Acro Lab (PA+L). Most recently, Nicole placed frst in the college at the Associate Professor/Professor level for the Presidential Excellence Award for Teaching and will be moving on to compete at the university level. STUDENT ACCOLADES Texas State Dance majors, Ilse Mascorro and Clarissa Coronado were invited to join Toni Bravo's company Diverse Space Dance Teatre and performed several works in her concert Game On, Game Of at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin. Dance major, Tate Navarro has been accepted into the Master of Fine Arts Dance program at Texas Woman’s University. GUEST ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Misti Galvan partnered with the Dance Division to bring in guest artist, Torens L. Johnson, for three days of classes involving Ballet, Modern, and African Dance. Johnson pursued his higher learning in dance with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center as a certifcate student in NY. He performed with the national and internationally known Ailey II, which is a part of the Ailey Organization and continues to teach with Ailey Camp every year, most recently being appointed to lead the very frst Ailey Camp in Detroit, MI. Mr. Johnson said about his time at Texas State: “I thoroughly enjoyed the students in the Dance Division. Tey are hard working and talented!” College of Fine Arts and Communication | 9
