Erina Duganne’s essay “Unlearning Street Photography from the Kamoine Workshop” was published as part of the exhibition catalogue Working Together: Louis Draper and the Kamoinge Workshop (Duke 2020). As part of the exhibition, currently on view at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and travelling to the Whitney Museum of Fine Arts, Te J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Cincinnati Art Museum, Duganne will chair one of the panels for the symposium "Te Kamoinge Workshop: Collaboration, Community, and Photography." Jenny Evans has been selected as the United States Society for Education through Art 2020 Student Award recipient for Outstanding Dissertation. Tommy Fitzpatrick has several new paintings up at Gallery Campeaux in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In addition, Tommy also has paintings displayed in the back room of Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas. [ 1 ] Margo Handwerker will publish "Social Practice, Meet Systems Esthetics,” in Log 48: Expanding Modes of Practice . Te launch date is April 1. Brian Johnson participated in a panel with the juror of Te Contemporary Print 2020 Claudia Zapata, fellow exhibition artists Lisette Chavez, Daryl Howard and Sightlines critic, Erin Keever. Te discussion, hosted by Sightlines and PrintAustin , focused on the current landscape of printmaking. MiHyun Kim’s ongoing participatory data drawing event, "Stories Become Data" project was featured as a Project of the Month in February by the European based Artist Collective Community, OMAi (Ofce of Media and Arts International). She was invited to host her traveling participatory data drawing event, "Stories Become Data: How Stories and Visual Narrative can be collected as Data through Co-Creation Process" at CAA ARTexchange. Te event was curated by the College Art Association (CAA)’s Service to Artists Committee, in collaboration with the Committee on Women in the Arts. Te event was held at Hokin Gallery at the Columbia College of Art and Design in Chicago. Jefrey Lieber served as the discussant for Te Art and Design of Mid-Century Modern Architecture; a panel sponsored by the Society of Architectural Historians at the 108th College Art Association conference in Chicago on February 12. Jefrey’s book Flintstone Modernism, or the Crisis in Postwar American Culture (Te MIT Press, 2018) [ 2 ] was reviewed by Timothy M. Rohan in the December 2019 issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians . Rohan calls it, "a highly original, thought-provoking addition to the scholarship on postwar American architecture" and concludes, "Lieber's idiosyncratic account gives others permission to write about the postwar era in a similarly free and passionate manner." Claudia Roeschmann is published in the “People to Watch 2020” by Graphic Design USA annual magazine, spotlighting a group of 20 people who embody the spirit of the creative community in the nation. Claudia was also awarded the title of Honorary Professor of International Studies at Texas State University. Omari Souza has signed a contract with intellect books for his book A pot Unmelted, a researched study of racist motifs in American Advertising . Te work from Omari Souza’s summer design for experience class, was submitted with Cleveland, Ohio’s HUD ofce for a development grant. Cleveland has now been ranked as a city fnalist. Omari has also been accepted to a writing workshop titled "Pivot" at Tulane University scheduled in June. Lana Waldrep-Appl and Shawn Camp’s two-person exhibition Echoes and Spaces opened on February 28th at ICOSA Collective in Austin. Lana Waldrep-Appl has a painting featured in this year’s People’s Gallery in Austin City Hall. STUDENT ACCOLADES Four M.F.A. students– Flor Barajas , Nathaniel Haefner , Ti Nguyen , and Stephanie Long – were invited to exhibit their Data Visualization projects at the City Hall in Austin in February. Te invitation was made by the Open Data Team in Austin. Four Art and Design Fall 2019 graduates are now full-time public school Art teachers. Laurie Billetter , Graduate of 2005, has accepted a position and will be teaching Art at Universal American School in Dubai starting August 1. Erin Cowen is teaching at Gerdes Junior High School, Luling ISD. Faith Flores is teaching at Goodnight Middle School in San Marcos ISD. Melanie Reel is teaching at Bill Brown Elementary in Comal ISD. Due to University precautions regarding COVID-19 Texas State Galleries has postponed the Student Juried Exhibition scheduled for March 23 – April 18. Stay tuned for updates regarding exhibitions scheduled for the end of spring term. PROJECT GRANT Molly Sherman received a project grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council to develop a new iteration of People’s Homes: Investigating Place with Portland’s Longtime Residents in Portland, Oregon. A set of Molly’s collaborative publications were selected by Blue Star Contemporary to be added to Publishing Against the Grain , a traveling exhibition organized and produced by the Independent Curator’s International.
