Dr. Schüler also presented fve papers at conferences in the United States: “Repertoire, Touring Schedules, Geography, and Forgotten Musicians: Black Minstrel & Jubilee Music in the Early 1880s” at the College Music Society Northwest Chapter Conference; “Using Sonic Visualiser and VAMP Plugins for Ethnomusicological Research: An Introduction” at the Society for Ethnomusicology Southern Planes Chapter Conference; “How ‘Blue’ Are Blue Notes? A Methodological Case Study” at the College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference; “Beyond Desmond Dekker and Bob Marley: Rastafarianism in Contemporary Reggae and Reggaetón” at the College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference; and “Analyzing Rubato: A Computer-Assisted and Perception-Based Study” at the American Musicological Society Southern Chapter Conference. Dr. Schüler continues to be the editor of the international research book series Methodology of Music Research and a review board member of several international journals and grant agencies. STUDENT ACCOLADES Katie Bulen [4] was selected by audition to perform at the SWACDA undergraduate conducting workshop. First year M.M. student, Ross Sanchez was named 2nd alternate in the International Trombone Association's Edward Kleinhammer Bass Trombone Orchestral Excerpt Competition. Ross also subbed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and received a National Alliance for Audition Support grant from the Sphinx Organization to audition for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. On February 10, Texas State University Music Studies major, Nicole Soler , [5] presented a research poster entitled "Queerness in the Workplace: How LGBTQ+ Music Educators Experience their Work Environment," at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention. Using queer theory (Watson, 2005), Nicole examined extant literature to investigate whether LGBTQ+ teachers have a diferent sort of teaching experience than their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. Nicole plans to continue to examine LGBTQ+ experiences in music education as an educator and graduate student in the future. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Several Trombone Studio alumni have been busy performing with various ensembles: • Matthew Acosta (B.M. '21) performed with the Colour of Music Festival Orchestra during their tour in Sacramento, California. Matthew is currently pursuing a M.M. Performance degree at Indiana University. • Ramiro Cortez (B.M. '18) performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. • Kevin Dugat (B.M. '13) performed with the Boston Pops. He's currently working on a DMA degree at Boston University. • Camden Scarborough (B.M. '17) performed with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra. • Jett Walker (B.M. '13/M.M. '20) performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He is currently pursuing a DMA degree at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Jazz graduate and pianist Dayne Reliford [3] shared the stage with jazz star Christian McBride at Austin's Long Center for the Performing Arts on March 25. BEING TOGETHER Senior Lecturer Richard D. Hall , composed, recorded and performed the music for several screen-dance flms that were recently featured at multiple flm festivals. For example, Being Together (2020) was selected into the COCO Dance Festival based in Port of Spain, Trinidad; the BIDEODROMO International Experimental Film Festival based in Basque Country in northern Spain; Brazil’s International Disability Film Festival in Assim Vivemos, Rio De Janeiro; the Ordinary Day Film Festival in Stockholm, Sweden; the Petit Plan: Americana Film Festival powered by the Hellenic American Union in Athens, Greece; the Ziel Spring Dance Film Festival.
