Evans Auditorium hosted the world premiere of African American composer Dorothy Rudd Moore’s From the Dark Tower , in a new orchestral version completed by Michael Ippolito , and Daveda Karanas joined the TXST Orchestra under the direction of Jacob Harrison for this auspicious performance. Dr. Kevin Mooney , was the featured guest on The Bookmark a program on KLRU-TV, Austin PBS. Mooney discussed his newly published book, Texas Jazz Singer Louise Tobin in the Golden Age of Swing and Beyond , on the February 20 live broadcast. Forty years after the fact, The Austin Chronicle recreated the cover photo of its March 4, 1983, issue, which spotlighted Austin Music Award winners. The then- and-now photos included Dr. Keith Winking, a former member of Ernie Sky and the K-Tels, an R&B band that won “Best Soul Band” and “Best Texas 45” (record, that is) in 1983. You can view the photos using this link. [2] STUDENT ACCOLADES Evan Blaché won the Golden Hornet String Quartet Smackdown VIII, emerging as the top competitor among 150 composers. His award included a professional performance and recording at the Graham Reynolds Studio. [3] Ryan Long received an Undergraduate Research Fellowship award, funded by the Tri-M Foundation, in support of his creative research project, Catharsis . Thomas Shafer and Jorge Rivera were named quarterfinalists in the National Trumpet Competition held at the University of Colorado Boulder. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Jeremy Spicer and Gilbert Elorreaga coached a trumpet ensemble from Leander ISD that won first place in the high school division at the National Trumpet Competition. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 13 Ian Davidson has appeared as soloist and chamber musician on six continents as part of forty-nine international concert tours. He is Principal Oboe of the Austin Opera Orchestra and English Horn and Associate Principal Oboe of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Other engagements include stints as Principal Oboe of the Dallas Bach Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Dallas and the Austin Sinfonietta as well as Assistant Principal Oboe of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Principal Oboe of the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, and Solo English Horn of the Bear Valley Music Festival. Appearances as Guest Principal Oboe include the San Antonio Philharmonic, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Opera Orchestra. Among his 77 concerto appearances include performances with the Dallas Bach Orchestra, Austin Chamber Orchestra, Austin Sinfonietta, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Laredo Philharmonic, Chamber Soloists of Austin, Blue Lake Festival Orchestra, Dallas Bach Orchestra.
