Amber Hinsley was a journalist in Los Angeles when she discovered she loved mentoring reporters as much as she loved being a reporter. After guest lecturing in several classes, she decided to go to graduate school to become a professor. She received her master's degree from Kansas State University, and her doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Hinsley loves learning new tools as the journalism industry evolves, and she is fortunate to have taught a range of practical skills courses (like Multimedia Journalism, Data Storytelling and Social Media as Professional Tools) as well as more critical analysis courses like Real News, Fake News & Media Literacy while at Texas State University or at her previous university. Drawing on her experiences as a newsroom manager, Hinsley's research has looked at the public's experiences with fake news, how the public determines the credibility of online information, and journalists' use of social media as crisis reporting tools, to name a few. Recently, Hinsley joined with an interdisciplinary research team to study communication related to COVID-19 and they have several projects in progress. Her research has been published in multiple academic journals, including Journalism, Journalism Studies, International Journal of Communication, Newspaper Research Journal, #ISOJ, Journal of Radio and Audio Media, Health Communication, and Media Report to Women” She was awarded the Grand Prize Winner, for Great Ideas for Teaching Competition, Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication during August 2020 - August 2021 # FACULTY SPOTLIGHT This is Hank Williams the IV. [3] STUDENTS ACCOLADES Students in the MC 4357 Sports As News class got an inside look at the gameday work operations for the San Antonio Spurs this week. The Spurs' Director of Broadcasting, Mike Kickirillo , a Bobcat from the class of '88, led a tour through the Frost Bank Arena's broadcast facilities, "live" set and TV camera locations. He then guided Larry Carlson 's 14 students through the TV truck as crew members prepared for Monday night's game against the Phoenix Suns. Kickirillo has long depended upon interns from Texas State's electronic media sequence. Students met veteran staffers Daniel Ashcraft , Taylor Hair , Avery Schneider , Carter Snowden and Kyle Spencer and enjoyed a Q&A session with Spurs TV reporter, Aerin Carreno . All are Texas State University graduates. Liam Capwell , Kickirillo's current TXST intern from last fall's MC 4357 class, is contributing video content this season, along with other duties, and spoke with the visitors about his opportunities. Radio play-by-play announcer Bill Schoening, "the voice of the Spurs," took questions from the Bobcats and told several KTSW crew members that he would be joining them this spring on several Texas State baseball broadcasts to be aired on the 89.9 airwaves. Several students stayed on after the tour and saw the Spurs pull off a last-minute, 104-102 upset win over the Suns.
