Mariachi Nueva Generación became a class at Texas State University in the fall of 1997. MNG is dedicated to the study and performance of all genres associated with mariachi, including, among others, the son, the huapango, the bolero, and the polka. Since its creation, Texas State Mariachi Nueva Generación has established itself as one of the leading university mariachis in Texas. The group maintains a busy schedule of performance both on and off campus and in all surrounding cities. MNG also engages students from all over Texas through workshops and clinics. In spite of its busy performance and teaching schedule, the group is committed to hosting the annual Feria del Mariachi competition and workshop held in the late Spring of each year. Mariachi Lince de Oro, our second mariachi, was founded in the Fall of 2008. The class is dedicated to the study and performance of the Mexican art form known as Mariachi. We study and perform music in many styles such as Son, Huapango, Bolero, Polka, and many others. Though still very new to the Texas State University multicultural music family, Mariachi Lince de Oro has already competed twice at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio. #MARIAHCHI STUDENTS Service. Keith Winking won the College Achievement Award in Teaching. Christopher Besch won the Department Achievement Award in Teaching. Daris Hale won the Department Achievement Award in Teaching. Nico Schüler won the Department Achievement Award in Scholarly/Creative Activity. STUDENT ACCOLADES Several music performance majors attended dress rehearsal of the Austin Symphony Orchestra and invited Music Director/Conductor Peter Bay to join in the Bobcat spirit. More than 100 mariachi musicians representing eight high schools from Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio joined Mariachi Nueva Generación and Mariachi Lince de Oro onstage for Noche de Mariachi . This performance culminated a day of mariachi clinics, workshops, lessons, and auditions. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Nicole Auringer mixed the audio for Buddy Daddies , winner of the 2024 Best Original Anime Award from Crunchyroll. Adam Schroeder is a baritone saxophonist and Associate Professor of Jazz & Commercial Music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Mark Masters realeased a new album of compositions by Clark Terry, entitled CT! Amy Yeung , a soprano who received her master’s degree in vocal performance from Texas State University, presented a lecture-recital of music by women composers as the 2024 Phi Kappa Phi Muriel D. Tomlinson Lecture at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she serves as professor of voice. This is the onstage performance of Noche de Mariachi College of Fine Arts and Communication | 15 MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES The Root Cellar Jazz Jam, the brainchild of Carter Arrington , offers jazz students an opportunity to perform every Thursday evening alongside established jazz artists. [1] Jose Manuel Garza, Jr . presented his poster called “A Formula for Healing: Metric Modulation in Entheos’s Time Will Take Us All ” at the Texas Society for Music Theory 46th Annual Conference at the University of Texas at Arlington. [2] The International Society of Bassists invited Utah Hamrick to present a clinic at its convention in Ann Arbor, MI. In his final performance as Music Director of Cincinnati’s Vocal Arts Ensemble, Grammy Award- winning conductor Craig Hella Johnson presented Johann Sebastian Bach’s magnificent Mass in B Minor . Lynn Ledbetter performed as Concertmaster with the Arlington Philharmonic in Washington, D.C., in a program of Brahms, Smetana, and Stamitz, marking her twenty-second year of collaborating with this ensemble. The University of Calgary presented Daria Rabotkina in a recital of music by Robert Schumann, Ludwig van Beethoven, Nikolai Medtner, and Paul Harvey Aurandt at the Rozsa Centre. [3] 2024 PRESIDENTIAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS ACCOLADES Ames Asbell won the Presidential Distinction Award in Service. Daveda Karanas won the Presidential Distinction Award in Scholarly/Creative Activity.
