LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING The cover features our 8th annual TEDx, hosted by the Department of Communication Studies. For a recap of the speakers, entertainment, and leadership team, see pp.7-9. • In Art and Design (pp.2-3), Barry Stone exhibited in Munich, Germany and has an upcoming exhibit in New York City. He also curated and participated in VAST IS THE SEA, a series of performances and presentations that was chosen as one of Glasstire magazine’s Top 5 exhibitions. Gina Tarver and Andrew Chen presented at the College Art Association national conference. • The Texas State Galleries (pp.4-5) hosted Nature Nurture—Nurture Nature , a group exhibit that explores connections between motherhood and nature. • In Communication Studies (pp. 6-7), Tricia Burke, Kristen Farris, Marek Muller, and Manu Pokharel published journal articles. Stephanie Dailey presented a “Visualizing Mental Health” project at the Texas State Innovation Lab at the 2024 SXSW. Elizabeth Eger presented at the TXST Health Scholar’s Showcase. • Dance (p.10) continued its community outreach efforts via Creation in Motion Touring Ensemble for Young Audiences (CIM TEYA) presentation of STREAM in Motion 9.0 , a concert co-directed by Kaysie Seitz Brown and Torens Johnson. In addition, Ana Baer created a monthly screendance program at the San Marcos Public Library. Ana also presented screendances in Colorado, Connecticut, Argentina, Cuba, and Portugal. • In Journalism and Mass Communication (pp.12- 13), the Texas Community Health News, co-directed by Daniel Carter and Kym Fox, placed articles with Texas Public Radio, Texas Tribune, Public Health COVER PHOTO: Christine Norton presenting at our 8th annual TEDx [ P G . 9 ] Watch, Business Insider, Harvard Public Health, Univision, and more. Alum Jacqueline Bayon won the award for Best Short at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, and alum Anna Tauzin was named to Lunchbox’s Top 30 Women in Food 2024. Read also about student and alum involvement with the San Antonio Spurs. • In Music (pp.14-15), Utah Hamrick presented at the International Society of Bassists, Daria Rabotkina performed at the University of Calgary, Lynn Ledbetter performed with the Arlington Philharmonic in Washington D.C., and Craig Hella Johnson gave his final performance as Music Director of Cincinnati’s Vocal Arts Ensemble. Alum Nicole Auringer mixed the audio for the 2024 Best Original Anime Award from Crunchyroll. Alum Adam Schroeder released a new album. • In Theatre (pp.16-17), Nadine Mozon was featured in American Theatre , Colin Shay won a national mentoring award, and Linda Nenno Breining co-wrote an opera that was selected from more than 50 entries for performance at an Opera Festival in Austin. Among the many awards won by students at the regional Kennedey Center American College Theatre Festival, Brooke Sauerwein (Sound Design), Michael Gault (Scenic Design), Jennifer Gonzalez (Lighting Design), Jose “Pepper” Garcia (Craft Technology), and Oscar Hough (Stage Management) are advancing to the Kennedy Center as National Finalists. This makes for 71 National Finalists over the past 20 years. • Alum Lily Kren makes her Broadway debut in The Who’s Tommy , while Ben Toomer joins the national tour of The Lion King , and Preston Perez plays Hans in the national tour of Frozen . Alum T.J. Young teaches at Carnegie Mellon and has a new play at the Chain Theatre in New York.
