Gina McDaniel Tarver , Professor of Art History at Texas State University, researches modern and contemporary art, art institutions, and visual culture in Latin America, specifically in Colombia. She received her Ph.D. at The University of Texas at Austin and was a Fulbright grant recipient. Her essays on Colombian art have appeared in books and journals in Colombia, Great Britain, France, and the United States. Her book, The New Iconoclasts: From Art of a New Reality to Conceptual Art in Colombia, 1961–1975 (Ediciones Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, 2016) is the first book in English about Colombian art of the 1960s and 1970s. She also co-edited a volume on art museums in Latin America, which is the first book in English on the topic. In 2022, Gina Tarver wrote a chapter titled We Must Fight: Feliza Bursztyn and Colombian Women in the Arts for the book “Feliza Bursztyn: Welding Madness”, edited by M. Dziewańska and A. Winograd. The book was published in Milan, Italy by Skira for the Muzeum Susch. Gina Tarver , in 2020, contributed to the book Liquid Ecologies in Latin American and Caribbean Art with a chapter called “‘The roar of the river grows ever louder’: Polluted Waters in Colombian Eco- art, from Alicia Barney to Clemencia Echeverri.” The book was edited by L. Gómez-Popescu and L. Blackmore and published by Routledge in New York. In 2019, Tarver wrote “Antagonistic Environments: Gendered Spaces and the Kinetic Installations of Colombian Artists Feliza Bursztyn, Jacqueline Nova, and Julia Acuña” for the book New Geographies of Abstract Art in Postwar Latin America . The book was edited by A. M. Franco and M. Álvarez and published by Routledge in New York, United States. # FACULTY SPOTLIGHT Treviño all took part. The series was chosen as one of Glasstire 's Top 5 exhibitions. Barry Stone was featured on Glasstire 's Art Dirt Podcast to discuss his work, Vast Is The Sea . Barry Stone will perform live and celebrate a new LP and accompanying book of photographs at Northern Southern Gallery on Thursday, April 11 at 4pm as a part of the Fusebox Festival in Austin. This project is funded in part by a grant from a Live Music grant from the City of Austin Department of Economic Development. Barry Stone will have a solo exhibition at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery in NYC which opens May 17th, 2024. [2] Gina Tarver presented “Environmental Crises, Bodily Fluids, and the World Otherwise: The Work of María Evelia Marmolejo” at the College Art Association annual conference in Chicago. This paper was part of the session Ecological Art in Latin America, 1960s–1980s, which she organized and chaired. STUDENT ACCOLADES Asia Estelle was awarded an honors undergraduate research fellowship that will support her thesis work. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3 ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art 2 | March 2024 | College News FACULTY ACCOLADES Lana Waldrep Appl and Michael Villarreal ’s two- person exhibition, Lawns and Gardens , opened March 1st at Lockhart Post Gallery in Lockhart. The show was on view through March 29th. [1] Andrew Chen gave a presentation entitled “The Binding of Personifications and the Image of the Enslaved, 1460–1560” at the College Art Association Annual Conference on February 17th. Adetty Pérez de Miles delivered the keynote address at the 6th Annual Naturalization Ceremony held at Texas State University on March 8. The Honorable Mark Lane, United States District Judge, administered the Oath of Citizenship to over 250 new citizens from around the globe. Dr. Pérez de Miles shared insights from her personal journey to becoming a U.S. citizen. She emphasized three key aspects: Courage in speaking truth to power, compassion in recognizing our shared humanity, and forging meaningful connections rooted in mutual responsibility toward one another. Jason Reed gave an artist talk in the Photography Program at University of Texas at Austin. Barry Stone' s work was included in Glitch: The Art of Interference , a museum survey exhibit on view at the Pinakothek de Moderne in Munich, Germany. The work is included in the exhibition catalog published by Distanz, Berlin. Barry Stone curated and participated in Vast Is The Sea , a series of performances and presentations that took place over 4 weekends in January and February featuring 8 artists exploring the relationships between sound and image at Co-Lab Projects in Austin.
