JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Dale Blasingame taught a MediaShift webinar on how journalists and publishers can best use Facebook Live, [ 1 ] the live-streaming function of the social media platform. He presented research he conducted with NPR, NowThis News, Al Jazeera+, Sinclair Broadcast Group and the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He also represented Texas State as a faculty mentor at the MediaShift J-School Hackathon at the University of Georgia. Blasingame guided a team of students from the University of North Carolina, Temple, Clemson and Georgia as they went through the process of creating a news startup. Dale Blasingame and Holly Wise were the faculty leads for Texas State’s participation in Electionland, a national reporting and social media verification effort on Election Day that compromised of more than 1,000 reporters and students. Texas State was one of 13 universities to be part of the project, and 45 SJMC students used advanced social media listening and verification tools to look for signs of voting irregularities across the state of Texas. Blasingame and three of his students, Kiersten Ehr , Taylor Martz , and Jessica Garza , were presenters at the University of Texas Social Media Summit to share their experiences with Electionland. Kym Fox and adjunct faculty member Terry Bertling represented the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the Mu Alpha Theta Major Fair at Reagan High School in San Antonio. Several hundred students from Northside Independent School District high schools explored career options and college offerings at the fair.
