was invited and published in the 15th year anniversary edition of the French journal Les Enjeux de l’ information et la communication . Salwa Khan , digital media instructor, published an article in Mediashift in October 2016. In the article, Khan explored the growing acceptance of the use of expletives in online journalism and writing, and how that is reflected in student work. Ray Niekamp authored two chapters in a journalism textbook, Media Ethics at Work: True Stories From Young Professionals . The book, edited by Lee Anne Peck and Guy Reel, is a compilation of real-world ethical dilemmas faced by young reporters. Niekamp’s chapters spotlighted situations faced by two SJMC grads. The book is in its second edition. Niekamp also authored two different chapters for the book’s first edition. Richard Parker’s work on the American Civil War was published in November by Oxford University Press. The New York Times Disunion: A History of the Civil War first appeared as a digital project upon the war’s 150th anniversary, led by Times editors and including a team of journalists and historians. The team won a 2011 Digital Media award and now Parker’s writing on the subtle drift of Texas into the orbit of the Confederacy and the explosive violence on the home front in the early war years can be found in the new book. His columns in The Dallas Morning News during the fall of 2016 provided running commentary on the presidential election and its surprise outcome. Olga M. Wilson was featured in an interview published in the PRSSA official publication Progressions written by SJMC student Kaley Consford . Wilson is the coordinator of the D. D. Hachar Visiting Hispanic Media Professionals Program held annually during Mass Comm Week. Every year, students and instructors from the Vidal M. Trevino School of Fine Arts and Communication in Laredo, TX are hosted on campus by the SJMC. Hachar sponsored guests featured this year were Elaine Aradillas, a crime reporter for People Magazine , and Gary Cooper, a multimedia journalist for Univision San Antonio and president of the San Antonio Association Hispanic Journalists. Holly Wise guest lectured via Skype in an advanced news writing course at American University in Washington D.C. She spoke about solutions journalism and its application in storytelling. Holly collaborated with Neil Patrick Stewar t in the Department of Theatre and Dance and hosted an improv workshop in her news writing and reporting course. DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES The School of Journalism and Mass Communication was selected to join the Google News Lab University Network. [ 2 ] The initial cohort includes 46 journalism schools around the world. This partnership with Google will provide opportunities for our students and faculty. Mass Comm Week 2016 was a tremendous success this year with almost 500 students and faculty attending more than 25 sessions. The signature event featured panels and hands-on workshops such as a Google News Lab conducted by Google Media Outreach Manager Nick Whitaker; Q & A sessions with Elaine Aradillas from People Magazine , social media editor for the Rio Olympics, Virginia Alves; and War Stories: Military coverage in the 21st Century, a Common Experience panel featuring military and civilian journalists and photographers. Seven sessions were live streamed on Facebook, with videos archived for future class use. More than 50 guest speakers, 27 alumni and 7 SJMC advisory council members participated throughout the week. [ 3] College of Fine Arts and Communication | 13 Breonna Ruffin , a senior advertising student, is one of only 50 students nationwide to be selected for American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Multicultural Student award. She will attend the conference and ceremony in New York City February 13-16 where she will accept the award.
