JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Dale Blasingame and adjunct faculty member Sara Shields presented at the National Student Electronic Media Convention, which was held by College Broadcasters Inc. November 2-4 in San Antonio. Blasingame and Shields discussed rules about flying drones on campus and strategies of teaching a drones course. Both faculty members are FAA-certified commercial drone pilots. Larry Carlson had a special article and sidebar for CBS Sports’ Longhorns 24/7 site published for Thanksgiving week, regarding the now discontinued Texas-Texas A&M football series. Earlier in November, Carlson attended the Southwest Newsroom Workshop held by the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) in San Antonio. Carlson and Dr. Tim England brought seven electronic media students from Texas State. They met with presenters and brought in questions and concerns specific to student media. Sessions dealt with law enforcement coverage, digital platforms, repairing the image of media outlets, access to public information and more. Daniel Carter’s article, “The Only Job a Robot Couldn’t Do,” was featured in the New York Times’ “What We’re Reading” section on October 17. Elizabeth Clark’s essay, “Lidice, Remembered,” has been selected for publication in Ten Spurs , the journal of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference at UNT. Clark was a workshop participant at the 12th annual conference in July, and she continued related research during October in Prague, Kladno and the nearby site of Lidice, a village destroyed by Nazis in June 1942. Clark conducted preliminary research last summer at Crest Hill, Illinois, near Chicago. Her blog, “Lidice Lives,” offers insights about the village and its revival.
