Erik Timmerman published “Viewing alone or together: Linking the viewing context for sexually explicit internet materials to sex-related attitudes” with Jihyun Kim in the International Journal of Interactive Communication Systems and Technologies . The Department of Communication Studies graduate faculty held their annual Graduate Day of Dialogue. [ 1 ] The 6-hour meeting, organized by Maureen Keeley , addressed topics including recruitment, curriculum, and, most importantly, how to best meet our current and future graduate students’ needs. STUDENT ACCOLADES Two M.A. students and were accepted as fellows to HASTAC Scholars for 2017-2019. HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory) is an interdisciplinary consortium of over 145 universities focused on changing teaching and learning in higher education in the digital age. Logan Carpenter’s [ 2 ] projects focus on sexual assaults on college campuses and the needs for increased education about consent communication. Lauren Lee’s [ 3] projects will focus on the intersection of interpersonal, relational, and health communication. Vanessa Salazar , who earned her M.A. in Communication Studies, received the 2017–2018 Graduate College Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award in the Social Sciences, Business, and Education. Her thesis, “Welcome aboard: An exploration of the impact of structured socialization on newcomer perceived organizational support, engagement and identification,” was directed by Stephanie Dailey . ALUMNI ACCOLADES Patty Walker Monical (BA 1982, MA 2008) is now a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Austin, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision. Felipe “Flip” Romero (B.A., 2013) is a Community Engagement Supervisor with the Austin Independent School District. His most recent project was serving as chief architect in the community engagement plan for AISD regarding the 1.4 billion-dollar school bond. MARVIN DAN LOVE 1929 – 2017 Former Texas State alum and Communication Studies faculty member Marvin “Dan” Love passed away at the age of 88. Before coming to Texas State, Dan was a pioneer of Austin radio and television. He served as the first evening newscaster for KTBC-TV (also known as Fox 7 Austin) and later ran KHFI- TV (now known as KXAN) as its general manager. He was elected to the Austin City Council in 1971 and re-elected in 1973, serving as mayor pro tem during both terms. At age 60, he came to Texas State to earn his M.A. Upon graduating, he began teaching with the Department of Communication Studies as a Senior Lecturer, earning several Golden Apple Teaching Awards and endearing himself to students and colleagues. Dan’s influence is continually celebrated with the Dan Love Public Speaking Festival held each semester, recognizing the most talented student speakers in the Department of Communication Studies. He is remembered fondly by local broadcasters, politicians, faculty and students as an energetic and welcoming man of many talents. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 7 REMEMBERING DAN LOVE
