FACULTY ACCOLADES Ann Burnette delivered a talk on the arguments used by woman sufrage leaders at the program “Selling Sufrage: Words and Symbols to Win the Vote and the ERA.” Te occasion was a fundraising event for the Turning Point Sufrage Memorial Association, which is raising money for a national memorial to commemorate the movement that secured women’s right to vote. She was also interviewed as an expert on presidential communication by the Washington Post for a piece entitled, “From ‘my generals’ to ‘my Kevin,’ Trump's preferred possessive can be a sign of afection or control.” Michael Burns was the keynote speaker at Te Ohio State University's Academic Leadership Forum. [ 1 ] He guided the provost and every vice president, dean, and chair/director at Ohio State through a workshop focused on best practices for conducting interdisciplinary research. Tis workshop was based of of the CoSearch program he developed with Marian Houser. Manusheela Pokharel [ 2 ] published “Cancer information overload: Discriminant validity and relationship to sun safe behaviors,” in Patient Education and Counseling . Her article, “Health communication roles in Latino, Pacifc Islander, and Caucasian Families: A qualitative investigation” was recently published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling . STUDENT ACCOLADES M.A. students Sean Dyhre , Jorlanditha Austin , and Noah Dawson travelled with Dr. Stephanie Dailey to the Organizational Communication Mini Conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Writing department. Tis unique event fused writing and dance with two recently published authors with professional dance backgrounds: Dr. Kendall Klym , Texas State alumna and Jennifer Sperry-Steinorth, Texas native. Christa Oliver set choreography on Tony-nominated actress Mary Bridget Davies and the cast of A Christmas Carol at Zach Teatre. [ 1 - 2 ] Christa organized the opportunity for current dance majors Vanessa Jones , Ivette Logan , and Erin Ellis to perform at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony on November 14th, and she also organized the masterclass that Nicole Wesley taught at Arlington Heights High School in Ft. Worth. Opening Door Dance Teatre, under the Artistic Direction of LeAnne Smith , presented Verities in conjunction with the Common Experience theme: Truth on October 17-19. Scott Vandenberg served as lighting designer and production manager. It featured the works of Dance faculty Ana Baer , Kaysie Seitz Brown , Lynzy Lab , Amanda McCorkle , Michelle Nance , and LeAnne Smith , with Austin-area guest artist choreographers Toni Bravo and Catherine Solass. [ 3] Associate Professor Nicole Wesley attended Arlington Heights HS Dance Department’s two-day Fall Recruitment and Senior Spotlight in Arlington, Texas. She taught a recruitment class and represented Texas State on campus. Nicole was nominated for the 2020 Presidential Excellence Award in the area of Teaching at Level One (Professor/Associate Professor) within the Department of Teatre and Dance. For community service, Nicole was invited to be on the School Health Advisory Council for Wimberley ISD. HAVE AN IDEA ?! C3 The Center for Communication, Collaboration & Creativit y (C3) DR. KWAK AWARDED $3,500 Dr. Jason Kwak was awarded $3,500 from the San Marcos Arts Commission for the 11th Texas State International Piano Festival. During the festival, world- renowned guest artists and faculty provide master classes and recitals that develop the advanced skills and techniques of the talented participants. Dr. Kwak, with the help of C3, is currently seeking other avenues of funding to ensure that young talented pianists from around the world have an opportunity to experience this life changing event. Te 11th International Piano Festival will take place during the Summer of 2020. DR. WINKING AWARDED $3,500 Dr. Keith Winking was awarded $3,500 from the San Marcos Arts Commission for the Eddie Durham Celebration/Hill Country Jazz Festival in early February of 2020 in the Evans Auditorium. Te Eddie Durham Celebration honors the famous San Marcos born jazz pioneer Eddie Durham. Te celebration will feature performances from Loren Schoenberg, the Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem who started his career playing with Eddie Durham, and Dough Lawrence, the featured tenor saxophone soloist with the Count Basie Band who played with Eddie Durham. RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM REP awards were just announced. Te College earned $92,640 in internal grants via the Research Enhancement Program, the 2nd highest dollar amount among colleges this year. Te dollar amount and number of recipients are our 2nd highest ever.
