[ 1 ] Te Listen-Sing Method (vol. 1) written by Dr. Cynthia I. Gonzales was published by SmartMusic last month. SmartMusic featured Dr. Gonzales in a webinar introducing the variety of aural skills exercises in Te Listen-Sing Method (vol. 1). Dr. Gonzales also presented about Te Listen-Sing Method (vol. 1) at the annual meeting of the College Music Society and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction. [ 2 ] Texas State music faculty Hank Hehmsoth recently had his frst professional journalist byline published. Te Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) invited him to write an article on NEA Jazz Master Dan Morgenstern’s 90th birthday on Tursday, October 24, 2019. Tis expansive article is the headliner for the JJA, which has honored Morgenstern as recipient of its Jazz Award for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism. [ 3] Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare eanred their 9th Grammy nomination (Austin-American Statesman) for Te Hope of Loving ; the album has garnerned signifcant critical acclaim. Saxophone professor Todd Oxford won First Place in the Professional Soloist Category of the American Protégé International Woodwinds & Brass Competition. He is also the nominee for the International Acoustic Music Awards – Instrumental Division in Florida. STUDENT ACCOLADES Edgar Blandon was hired as a music mentor for Kids in A New Groove, providing Texas youth in foster care with a one-on-one mentoring relationship through weekly private music instruction, giving students the ability to build concrete strategies for life-long success. Julio Gonzalez was a participant in Dr. Crystal Alexander-Duckett’s Texas State guest presentation of "Te Benefts of Studying Martial Arts: A Musician’s Discovery of Tai Chi Chuan." Lauren Gordon has been selected as the guest soloist with Sycamore Springs Middle School Band in 2020. Abel Jaimes won a saxophone position in the Young Adult Honors Wind Ensemble to perform at Austria's Musikverein in Summer 2020. Chris Martinez is president of the Texas State Chapter of Collegiate Texas Music Educators Association. Joseph Treviño has been named Outstanding Collegiate Music Educator for 2019 by the Texas Music Educators Association. John Vinzant presented his paper, “Sed Non Eodem Modo: Te Origins of Ludomusicology Compared to Musikwissenschaft,” at Texas Christian University for the fall 2019 conference of the American Musicological Society-Southwest Chapter. Our singers performed very well at the recent National Association of Teachers of Singing Texoma Region Competition in Denton. Finalists were Cassidy Wallace (2nd place) and Christine Ashbaugh (5th place). Semi-fnalists were Sarah Hernandez , Gavin Magee , Lucas Phillips , Anai Winn Quezada , Hunter Sabin , Abraham Villarreal , and Gabryella Carelli . Other participants were Darin Ruiz , Paiton Seals , Pedro Valdez , and Lyndsea Woodall . ALUMNI ACCOLADES Aaron Carter-Enyi , now an Assistant Professor at Morehouse College, led a workshop for the Society of Music Teory Committee on Race and Ethnicity, which was attended by Texas State music theorist Dr. Cynthia I. Gonzales . Steven Vogel (B.M. ’15) recently joined the Edwards Instrument Company artist roster. He is currently on the faculty at Texas Lutheran University and Lone Star College – University Park, in addition to holding positions with the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass. SCHOOL ACCOLADES Texas State’s Mariachi Lince de Oro, directed by Miguel Guzman , were featured performers in San Marcos Record’s article “Centro Holds Annual Noche de Gala.” Te gala featured keynote speaker Sandra Cisneros, notable poet and author of Te House on Mango Street . Funds from the gala benefted Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos. Another successful Texas State Piano Day was held on November 9, ofering lessons, masterclasses, presentations, and a Q/A session with 7 piano faculty members. Te day included a special piano recital by current and former students. Piano professors Daria Rabotkina and Jason Kwak headed up the project, with great contributions from lecturers and senior lecturers Kyung Ae Lee , Ezra Bartz , Alena Gorina , Kayla Chon , and Kristin Roach . All provided their expertise with great enthusiasm. THE MAGIC FLUTE Te Magic Flute , produced at Texas State University’s beautiful Performing Arts Center, was awarded Tird Place in Division V of the Te National Opera Association 2018-2019 Opera Production Competition. Directed by Marc Reynolds (pictured) and conducted by Jacob Harrison , the production was strengthened by “the wonderful Texas State voice teachers and our amazing vocal coach Kristin Roach,” according to Reynolds. Te competition cycle had a sizable number of entries this year, taking 24 judges upwards of three hundred hours to view all submissions. As stated by the NOA organizers,“Te future of opera is in good hands.” College of Fine Arts and Communication | 17
