COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER ISSUE | FALL 2019 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING “Matthew McConaughey falls to 0-1-1 against Texas State.” Last February when he won a Medal of Arts from the Texas Cultural Trust, so did Music’s Craig Hella Johnson. Now, SJMC’s Jenny Buschhorn defeated McConaughey and four other nominees for the Austin chapter of the American Advertising Federation Educator of the Year Award. (See video p. 15.) Art and Design faculty continue to present their creative and scholarly work across the country (pp. 2-3). Over a dozen faculty and students in Communication Studies presented their research in national venues (pp.8-11) while Bekah Fox was the Fall Dean’s Seminar recipient for her communications work related to fghting forest fres (p. 9). Dance celebrated its 35th Opening Door Dance Teatre concert and Christa Oliver created the choreography for Zach Teatre’s A Christmas Carol (p.12). In Music, Craig Hella Johnson and his choral ensemble Conspirare earned their 9th Grammy nomination, and the school’s production of Te Magic Flute placed 3rd nationally in their division of Te National Opera Association. Teatre faculty continue to earn rave reviews and awards for their professional work (pp. 18-22), and congratulations to the college’s four faculty book authors (p. 23). Student accolades include: Carrington Tatum’s internship with Te Washington Post (p.15); Daniella Carrera’s research accepted for presentation in Sweden (p.15); Joseph Treviño named Outstanding Collegiate Music Educator for 2019 by the Texas Music Educators Association; and at the regional Kennedy Center American College Teatre Festival, four of the six ten-minute plays and fve of the six one- act plays are by Texas State students (p.20). Finally, a sad, but fond farewell to Daniel LeFave, a young alum who always exhibited kindness, sympathy, and genuine humanity (p.23). May we all live as full of love and compassion as he did.
