College of Fine Arts and Communication | 9 FACULTY ACCOLADES Ann Burnette delivered a talk on the arguments used by woman suffrage leaders at the program “Selling Suffrage: Words and Symbols to Win the Vote and the ERA.” The occasion was a fundraising event for the Turning Point Suffrage Memorial Association, which is raising money for a national memorial to commemorate the movement that secured women’s right to vote. She was also interviewed as an expert on presidential communication by the Washington Post for a piece entitled, “From ‘my generals’ to ‘my Kevin,’ Trump's preferred possessive can be a sign of affection or control.” Michael Burns was the keynote speaker at The Ohio State University's Academic Leadership Forum. [ 1 ] He guided the provost and every vice president, dean, and chair/director at Ohio State through a workshop focused on best practices for conducting interdisciplinary research. This workshop was based off of the CoSearch program he developed with Marian Houser. Manusheela Pokharel [ 2 ] published “Cancer information overload: Discriminant validity and relationship to sun safe behaviors,” in Patient Education and Counseling . Her article, “Health communication roles in Latino, Pacific Islander, and Caucasian Families: A qualitative investigation” was recently published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling . STUDENT ACCOLADES M.A. students Sean Dyhre , Jorlanditha Austin , and Noah Dawson travelled with Dr. Stephanie Dailey to the Organizational Communication Mini Conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. [ 3] C3 The Center for Communication, Collaboration & Creativit y (C3) COFAC FACULTY AWARDED THE 3RD MOST REP FUNDING AMONG TXST COLLEGES In December, the FY 2024 Research Enhancement Program (REP) grant cycle awarded five projects totaling $64,000 to the College of Fine Arts and Communication (CoFAC) faculty. Among all colleges, CoFAC was awarded the third most total funding in the REP competition. A total of 18 applications were submitted with COFAC faculty serving as the project leads. The FY 2024 REP Awardees include PIs (lead faculty) – Jason Reed , Annie Silverstein , Ali Forbes , Jessica Mallios , and Ana Martinez . Additionally, three of the REP projects awarded have Co-PIs (assisting faculty), Barry Stone , Johnny McAllister , and Dan Seed . Congratulations to these awardees and all applicants who helped our college have another competitive year of REP funding! The C3 Team encourages all CoFAC faculty who applied for a REP in this past funding cycle and in the ones prior, to work with C3 to seek external funding opportunities for their projects. Meredith Williams C3 Team 512.245.6719 mc65@txstate.edu Josh Miller became the Vice-Chair Elect of the Rhetoric and Communciation Theroy division Mark Paz presented at the National Communication Association conference Emily Pollard recieved the 2023 Top Mater's Thesis award 8 | November and December 2023 | College News 4 5 6 STUDENT ACCOLADES Hector Manriquez presented on a panel entitled "Helping New Coaches Thrive: A Proposal for a Forensics Teaching and Learning Academy" at the Texas State Communication association conference. The Communication Studies Graduate Association (CSGA) is a departmental organization dedicated to unifying the graduate students in Communication Studies at Texas State University. CSGA hosted an “Unwind” event to focus on mindfulness and gratitude, featuring activities, games, snacks, and connection. Members of Lambda Pi Eta, the Communication Studies National Honor Society, gave back to the San Marcos Community by participating in the 2023 Fall River Cleanup. Four LPE members, Haley Bass, Bailey Thrasher, Greg Ordonez, and Tessa Thurlkill, along with Faculty Advisor Mark Paz, attended the Texas Speech Communication Association Conference in Houston. The students learned more about their majors, possible career paths, and were able to network with scholars in the field of Communication Studies. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Grace McCleskey is currently a doctoral student at Texas Christian University. She recently published “Teaching critical media effects through classic horror films” in Communication Teacher . The paper utilizes clips from five popular horror films that feature common transphobic tropes and teaches students to apply each tenet of critical media effects (CME) theory into their analysis of the films. The piece was co- authored with Jasmine Austin. Emily Pollard is currently a doctoral student at the University of New Mexico. Emily received the 2023 Top Master’s Thesis (Rhetorical/Critical Analysis) for her thesis, “Intersections of Queer and Immigrant Identities in NBC’s ‘Superstore’” at this year’s convention. [6] Gavin Thompson published “Food desserts: How ‘Bringing home the bacon varies across neighborhoods’” in Communication Teacher .
