Te award recognizes one MA program per year that demonstrates excellent quality in developing research. Te award was presented at the 2018 NCA conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. [4] Te Department of Communication Studies hosted the third annual TEDx Texas State University conference on November 3rd at Te Marc in downtown San Marcos. [5 ] Over 300 people attended, worked, and participated in the event. Te 2018 TEDx event focused on the theme “reXamine.” Te theme featured ideas that push the status quo, ask why, make the old new again, and challenge norms. Five of the 12 speakers were College of Fine Arts and Communication Faculty or students: Michael Maresca (faculty, Teatre and Dance), Shannon Faseler (faculty, Art and Design), Morgan Jones (undergraduate Art and Design), Jake Young (undergraduate, Teatre and Dance), and Yocelyn Riojas (M.F.A. student, Art and Design). Te event also featured three of the entertainment sessions: Lynzy Lab (faculty, Teatre and Dance) sang her song “A Scary Time” (for Boys), VocaLibre, led by Craig Aamot (faculty, Music), performed a medley of songs related to the reXamine theme, and a group of Musical Teatre students led by Michael Maresca sang a mashup of pop songs arranged by undergraduate student Daniel Miller . Several community sponsors and supporters of this year’s event strengthened the connection between the city of San Marcos and the University. Tis event is the main project for the Communication Studies undergraduate Event Planning Class, working closely with the TEDx Leadership team. Te TEDx Leadership team consists of several faculty members and students: Marsha Burney (Comm Studies), Michael Burns (Comm Studies), Kristen Farris (Comm Studies), Cassandra LeClair (Comm Studies), Mark Paz (Comm Studies), Ann Burnette (Comm Studies), Seth Frei (Business), and student interns David Beadle (M.A., Comm studies), Hannah Jones (M.A., Comm Studies), and Carlos Corona (undergraduate, Chemistry). C3 The Center for Communication, Collaboration & Creativit y (C3) $3KFROMSANMARCOSARTSCOMMISSION Dr. Jason Kwak was awarded $3,000 from the San Marcos Arts Commission for the 10th Texas State International Piano Festival. During the festival, world- renowned guest artists and faculty provide master classes and recitals that develop the advanced skills and techniques of the aspiring young pianists. Dr. Kwak, with the help of C3, is currently seeking other avenues of funding to ensure that young talented pianists from around the world have an opportunity to experience this life-changing event. Te 10th International Piano Festival will take place in June 2019. $4KFROMSANMARCOSARTSCOMMISSION Dr. Keith Winking was awarded $4,000 from the San Marcos Arts Commission for the Eddie Durham Celebration/Hill Country Jazz Festival that honors the famous San Marcos born jazz pioneer Eddie Durham. Te celebration will feature performances from Loren Schoenberg, who started his career playing with Eddie Durham, and Doug Lawrence, the featured tenor saxophone soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra who played with Eddie Durham. Musicians will play many of Eddie Durham’s compositions. Te Hill Country Jazz Festival will be held in early February 2019 along with the Count Basie Concert on February 9, 2019 in Evans Auditorium. $54K IN AWARDS Congratulations to our Research Enhancement Program recipients. Te College received $54,776 in awards. Tis is the 3rd most, behind Science and Engineering and Liberal Arts. Individual recipients are Elizbeth Eger (Communication Studies), Clay Craig (Journalism and Mass Communication), are Holly Veselka (Art and Design). Team awards went to S tephanie Dailey and Kristen Farris (Communication Studies) as well as Joshua Miller and Lindsay Timmerman (Communication Studies). College of Fine Arts and Communication | 9
