Jerry Ruiz directed a staged reading of Katie Bender’s Te Survivors at the Susanna Dickinson House as well as a reading of Ruby by Raul Garza at Ground Floor Teatre, both in Austin. He also directed a workshop of Star Crossed an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet . C. Denby Swanson’s new full-length play Bad Science , commissioned by the Educational Teatre Association, will be published in the upcoming issue of Dramatics Magazine . Bad Science is a fast-paced dramedy about big emotions, big decisions, romantic relationships, vaccines, the internet, the high school dance, and Arthur Miller’s classic play Te Crucible . Katie Van Winkle shared her research at the United States Air Force Academy’s War, Literature, and the Arts conference. Her paper, “I Refuse to Commemorate 1916," examines performances of political violence and civilian death in the centenary commemorations of Ireland’s 1916 Rising. In November, she participated in the American Society for Teatre Research’s working group Violent Incitements. STUDENT ACCOLADES Marisol Aguilar (B.F.A., Production and Performance) is part of Te Sea World Singers, a 6 person choir, performing in the Nativity Show every weekend December through January 5. B.F.A. Technical Production Senior Jesse Walser-Castro designed lighting for all eight dance pieces in Paradox , the B.F.A. Student Choreography Showcase in Evans Auditorium. He was assisted by B.F.A. Production junior Matthew Waller and fellow designer B.F.A. Technical Production junior Max Wallace , who created the show’s two projection designs. Marily Gonzalez (B.F.A., Technical Production) was a painter for All Shook Up this summer at the Zilker Hillside Teatre. M.F.A. Lighting Designer Andrew McIntyre designed projections for CIM TEYA’s newest dance work, Enginography , which premiered at Avante , the Opening Door Dance concert in the Patti Strickel Harrison Teatre. Te piece then was presented as part of the International COCO Dance Festival in Trinidad, where Andrew premiered another projection design for Merge Dance Company’s the absence of self. Karen Rivas (B.F.A., Performance and Production) won the Texas State Writing Center Essay Contest with “Cultural Discretion: How Music, Poetry, and America Adopted Me” or “Nineteen: Te Age of Inquisition.” In November, Jake Young (B.F.A., Musical Teatre) gave a speech entitled, “reXamining Masculinity: How my Art Makes Me Masculine” at the TEDx Texas State event. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Rita Anderson (M.A., Teatre History) is the newly- elected Dramatists Guild Regional Representative for the Austin/San Antonio area. Her play, #Limbotastic , will be performed in January at Hyde Park Teatre as part of FronteraFest 2019. In addition, Rita’s From Ashlee to Ashes & Dust to Dustin , is a semifnalist for a short comedy fest in Dallas. Her Woman Hollering Creek will be published in S mith & Kraus’s Best Women’s Monologues of 2019 . Maggie Bera (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) recently performed in Hel’s Kitchen at the PlayroomTeater in New York. Colin Bevis (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2014) is in Elf Te Musical at Chafn’s Barn. Michaela Bolt (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) was in the cast of Hairspray at North Shore Music Teatre. Johnny Brantley III (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2016) is doing the world premiere of the pre-Broadway engagement of Beetlejuice in Washington, DC. Stephen Brower (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2015) is currently performing the lead role in the national tour of Anastasia . Michael Burrell (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) recently starred in Hair as Claude at the Geva Teatre Center in New York and is currently starring as the Beast in Beauty and the Beast at the Teatre Under the Stars. Alumni Oscar Cabrera opened the World premiere production of Wolf at the Door at New Jersey Rep in mid-October. Zach Campion (B.F.A., Performance and Production) has served as voice and/or dialect coach on about 35 productions since moving to the DC area in 2013. He is currently voice and dialect coaching a production of Paula Vogel’s Indecent at Arena Stage, which opens in late December. In December, Zach returns to Arena Stage to provide voice and dialect support for Kenneth Lin’s Kleptocracy , a play about the economic and political fallout of the collapsed Soviet Union. Zach will also be providing public speaking workshops to the National Women, Infants, and Children Association (a non-proft education and advocacy group), preparing their staf for the 2019 Washington Leadership Conference and Annual Education and Training Conference. Brian Corkum (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2018) played Te Aviator in Te Muse’s Fate Still Rests . Julia Estrada (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) is playing the lead role of Eva Perón in ACT of Connecticut’s production of Evita . Tori Gresham (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) is in the cast of Matilda at the Village Teater in Seattle. Spencer Hansen (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) made his Of-Broadway debut as a musical director of Te Book of Merman at St. Luke’s Teatre in New York. Jorrel Javier (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2018) is playing Grover Underwood and Mr. D in the National Tour of Te Lightening Tief . Ben Mayne (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2013) joined the company of the new Bob Dylan musical Girl From Te North Country at Te Public Teater in New York. Sean McGibbon (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2012) won a TBA Award for Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role for Million Dollar Quartet. Blair Medina (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2018) performed in 54 Below’s Stranger Sings . Johnique Mitchell (B.F.A., Acting 2015) is joining the Oregon Shakespeare Company for their 2019- 2020 season. Grace Muawad (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2019) is currently performing in the ensemble of Beauty and the Beast at the Teatre Under the Stars. Ryne Nardecchia (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2017) is currently performing in the national tour of Fiddler on the Roof . Edi Patterson has joined the cast of Rian Johnson’s modern day murder mystery movie, Knives Out . Te flm will feature Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, and Lakeith Stanfeld. Natalie Rankin (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2014) recently played Ligarius in Julius Caesar at the Nashville Shakespeare Festival, and starred in Newsies playing the title role of Katherine Plumber at Chafn’s Barn. Trevor Roderick (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2011) is currently performing in the national tour of Te King and I . Cristina Sastre (B.F.A., Musical Teatre 2019) recently played the title role of Nina in In Te Heights directed by Michael Balderrama at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, NC.
