Eger helping with Te Green Corn Project 6 | November & December | College News COMMUNICATION STUDIES Communication Studies, Health Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Leadership Studies, Organizational Communication, Persuasive Communication, Political Communication, & Teacher Certif ication in Communication Studies FACULTY ACCOLADES Stephanie Dailey’s article, “What we are talking about when we talk about social media: A framework for study,” published in Sociology Compass , was named one of the journal’s top 20 most downloaded recent papers, receiving some of the highest downloads in the 12-months post online publication. Kristen Farris , Marian Houser , Logan Carpenter (M.A., Comm Studies), Trevor Kauer (M.A., Comm Studies), and Holly Van Eynde (M.A., Comm Studies) received the Instructional Development Division’s Top Paper award at the National Communication Association conference. Teir paper, “Te road to hel(l) icopter teaching: An empirical examination of a new instructional communication construct” breaks new ground in the feld as the frst investigation of the concept of “helicopter teaching.” Marian Houser’s article, “Te teacher-student relationship as an interpersonal relationship” was selected as the 2018 Distinguished Article award winner for the NCA Instructional Development Division. Te award recognizes one outstanding scholarly article that contributes signifcantly to the feld of Instructional Communication or Communication Education. Te article is one of the most frequently cited articles in the feld of instructional communication. Roseann Mandziuk presented “Spectres of race and remembrance: (Dis)fguring the Confederate past” at the National Communication Association Convention in Salt Lake City. She also responded to two panels and participated in the Diversity Forum. She also received a Presidential Citation for Service for contributions as Chair of the 2018 Task Force on NCA’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion in Convention Site Selection and Planning. Roseann was nominated as one of two candidates for NCA Second Vice President. She participated in the “Meet the Candidates” forum, addressed the Legislative Assembly, and visited many association meetings. Roseann also participated in the panel “Nevertheless, Sexual Harassment Persists: Hill/Tomas, #MeToo, and Feminist Activism” at the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender Conference in South Lake Tahoe. STUDENT ACCOLADES Undergraduate student Luke A. Dye received a Top Paper award for “A Devils Guide to Public Speaking: Lessons from Screwtapes Communication Principles.” He also presented the paper at the NCA Conference in Salt Lake City. [1] M.A. student Trevor Kauer was awarded Top Student Paper in the Nonverbal Communication Division for “First Responder’s Intimate Partner Communication: Perceptions of Job-Related Stress, Relational Support, and Appraisals of Stress.” [ 2] Trevor presented the paper to the 2018 National Communication Association conference in Salt Lake City. Trevor also published “You see a baby die and you’re not fne:” Stress and coping strategies in volunteer emergency medical technicians” in the Journal of Applied Communication Research . M.A. student Lauren Lee co-authored a paper that received a Top Paper award from NCA’s Training and Development Division. Te paper title is “Unveiling Multicultural Communication Barriers and Strategies to Improve Marrow Donor Recruitment.” Te frst author on the manuscript is Jessica Raley , an alum of our M.A. program and current program faculty member in the College of Health Professions. Te Elton Abernathy Forensics Society traveled to New York for the Of-Broadway Swing Tournament at Hofstra University and Nassau Community College. Members of the Communication Studies Graduate Association and faculty advisor Dr. Elizabeth K. Eger helped Te Green Corn Project by taking down their annual fall fundraising event at Boggy Creek Farm in East Austin. CSGA Vice President Michael Tahmoressi coordinated the service event. [ 3] #OURALUMNI Chris Hosek (B.A., 1997) is a principal of Texas Star Alliance, specializing in direct lobbying and state agency relations. He has experience with a broad range of legislative issues and policy initiatives including a specifc expertise in the energy sector. He recently won the D CEO Magazine Services Innovator of the Year award for his infuential and state-of-the-art representation of oil and gas clients. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Paula Baldwin (M.A., 2009) recently earned tenure and promotion as an Associate Professor of Health Communication at Western Oregon University. Brenda MacArthur (M.A., 2014) completed her post doc in Health Communication and was hired as Message Design Faculty and Health Communication Research Lead in the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stonybrook University. Colter Ray (M.A., 2014), completed his Ph.D. at Arizona State and was hired at as a tenure track Assistant Professor of Interpersonal and Health Communication at San Diego State University. Reyna Vasquez (B.A., 2015) is an Events and Volunteer Manager with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio. Diana Zulli (M.A., 2013) completed her Ph.D. at University of Utah and was hired as a tenure track Assistant Professor of Public Relations and Political Communication at Purdue University.
