He presented a lecture “How to Succeed as a Professional Musician” for the Memphis Youth Symphony and gave a FB Live clinic for the S.E. Shires Instrument Company. Dr. McCain was also invited to lead virtual masterclasses at the University of Toronto, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory (Singapore), Mahidol University (Tailand), University of Georgia, Vanderbilt University and the University of Hartford. He recently performed live concerts for Austin’s Beerthoven Concert Series. [4] He hosted several guest artists to work with Texas State trombone majors including: Colin Williams (NY Philharmonic), Peter Steiner (International Soloist), Amanda Stewart (St. Louis Symphony), Brian Hecht (Atlanta Symphony), James Markey (Boston Symphony), Ken Tompkins (Detroit Symphony), Marques Young (Malaysian Philharmonic), Vanessa Fralick (Toronto Symphony), and Weston Sprott (Metropolitan Opera). Recently, McCain was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Austin Chamber Music Center. Todd Oxford is a nominee for the Texas Commission on the Arts “Texas State Artist.” Tis designation is the highest designation that the Texas Legislature gives in the arts. Todd took part in a virtual transatlantic meeting to discuss collaborative opportunity between Texas State University School of Music and the Hochschule für Musik in Mainz, Germany. He was invited to participate in a panel discussion: “Network Music Technology for No-latency Livestreaming and Synchronizing Audio at Multiple Locations – applications in Music Performance and Classrooms During the Pandemic.” Dr. Nico Schüler recently published a book chapter on “Contextuality and Interdisciplinarity in Digital Music Research: History, Current Projects, and A Case Study” in the book Contextuality of Musicology – What, How, Why and Because (ed. by T. Popović Mladjenović, et al., Belgrade, 2020). He also published articles on Conjunto and on Pansori in Music Around the World (ed. by A. R. Martin and M. Mihalka, ABC-CLIO, 2020). Dr. Schüler was invited to teach two workshops on computer- assisted analysis of expressive timing in music at the 2020 international conference by the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR). He also presented two papers at the international conference by the 2020 German Society for Music Teory and one paper at the fall 2020 conference by the American Musicological Society Southwest Chapter. STUDENT ACCOLADES Evan Blaché recently made his professional debut as part of the Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble Conspirare during their recent virtual choir concert, Unity: Songs of Invitation . [ 5 - 6] Evan is a Music Studies major, studying voice under Dr. Richard Novak and is this season’s Insight Fellow. Te ISO Quartet ( Edgar Blandon , Julio Gonzalez , Trinidad Herrera , Robert Vasquez ) performed on the School of Music Student Departmental Recital. Sa Ra Park , a graduate music theory student, won the 2020 Hewitt-Oberdoerfer Award for the Best Student Paper in the American Musicological Society Southwest Chapter for her paper on “Domenico Scarlatti’s Musical Style: His Keyboard Sonata K. 288.” Ms. Park was also invited to be part of a graduate student panel to discuss the topic of “Te Next Generation of College Music Professors” at the 2020 College Music Society national conference. At the fall 2020 conference of the American Musicological Society Southwest Chapter, she presented a research paper on “An Alternative Analytical Approach to the Finale of the Wind Symphony Culloden by Julie Giroux,” which is part of her Master’s thesis. Ms. Park was also the recipient of a conference attendance grant by the Society for Music Teory. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Adam Schroeder was recently featured among the distinguished alumi in the 2020 College Report, adding to his impressive list of achievements since graduating in May 2000. Schroeder studied under Dr. Keith Winking and Dr. James Polk . He then went on to complete a M.M. in Jazz Studies from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach in 2010. Mr. Schroeder currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz and Commercial Music as well as the Assistant Director of the Division of Jazz and Commercial Music at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Beyond his educational success, Schroeder has established himself as an infuential baritone saxophonist in the global jazz community. In addition to his quartet, his performance achievements include Grammy Award-winning and nominated albums, playing with Lady Gaga’s “Jazz & Piano Shows,” the Los Angeles & Las Vegas Philharmonic’s, the Ray Charles Orchestra, Michael Bublé, John Beasley’s MONK’estra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band as well as many television performance credits. SCHOOL ACCOLADES Krystyn Jensen has received the National Outstanding Advisor Award from Sigma Alpha Iota for her work as Chapter Advisor to the Texas State University Teta Omega chapter. Since being initiated into Teta Omega in Spring 2004, she has been active in SAI serving in multiple collegiate and alumni chapter ofcer positions (including President at both levels) and at the national level as the Kappa A Province Ofcer from 2012-2015. Te Texas State University Trombone Choir, under the direction of Dr. Martin McCain , recently released a virtual performance of “America the Beautiful.” Tis Veteran’s Day performance is available here. MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD Christopher Martinez recently received the Texas Music Educators Association Outstanding Music Educator Award. Tis designation is awarded to students across the entire state of Texas who demonstrate exemplary leadership, maintain a very high GPA, and who have contributed to the profession of music education as a university student.
