LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Wrapping up Fall 2021... Art and Design faculty presented their research and creative work in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Milwaukee, and at universities in Alabama, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, California, and Colorado (pp.2-3). Jennifer Datchuk was named the Ceramic Artist of the Year by Ceramic Monthly , and Erina Duganne earned a $50,000 grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation (pp. 2-3). With over $100,000 in funding, awarded to thirteen faculty, the College ranked first in dollars awarded via the university’s annual Research Enhancement Grant program (p.5). Over a dozen Communication Studies faculty presented their research at the annual National Communication Association conference, which was planned by Roseann Mandziuk via her position as Vice President of the NCA (pp. 6-7). For an overview of Communication Studies’ Career Readiness Program see pp.8-9; for a preview of TEDx see p.10. Dance faculty performed in Baltimore and Austin, and screened their dances in Mexico, Bulgaria, India, Brazil, Netherlands, Iran, and Tokyo (pp. 12). Dance faculty have been working with the San Marcos Housing Authority on an after-school program, and Michelle Nance will be receiving an Everette Swinney Teaching Award (p. 13). In Journalism and Mass Communication, two students were selected for the American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Multicultural Program, and KTSW students won a national award from the College Broadcasters Inc (pp.14-15). Students at The University Star earned national awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the National College Media Convention (p.15). In Music, Craig Hella Johnson earned his 10th Grammy nomination as Artistic Director of Conspirare (p. 17). Ian Davidson and Daris Hale perform on the soundtrack for the new HBO documentary Simple as Water (p.16). Theatre alumni are performing across the country, including appearances in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, off-Broadway, on HBO, with Cirque du Soleil, and in national commercials (pp.19- 20).
