beloved Old Main. The hands-on demonstration was led by electronic media alum and freelance drone pilot Ben Kailing , who taught students how shoot FPV (first- person point of view) videography. Using special goggles, students were able to see from the perspective of the drone itself. Kailing is the owner of Lazer Bear Studio, a media production company specializing in FVP drone videography, which he founded after working as a production assistant for Texas Parks and Wildlife. He showed off his self-made drones and gave advice to students who want to enter the industry. Kelly Kaufhold and Jon Zmikly were invited to participate in a panel discussion, Bridging the Gap Between the Real World and J-School, at the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication annual conference at Baylor University on November 3. The two-day panel featured mass communication educators from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico and included research and professional panels. Zmikly also serves as the webmaster for SWECJMC and Kaufhold will serve as vice president and research chair for next year’s conference. Chuck Kaufman reports that the student-run media strategies firm has had a busy fall with two clients, Rockhard scp, International, and the Mystick Krewe of Okeanos. Rockhard, based in Houston with offices in Austin, is a polymer concrete manufacturer that works with municipalities and other sectors to produce leading-edge infrastructure materials. Mystick Krewe of Okeanos is an organization that captures and celebrates the Mardi Gras season with an annual gala and parade in San Marcos. It raises funds to support fine arts programs at San Marcos middle schools. The group is led by Dr. Wayne Kraemer . National Student Electronic Media Convention in Baltimore, MD with 5 awards in 4 categories in the National Student Production Awards, including Best Public Service Announcement Audio: 1st Place, Halloween Safety PSA by Sam Zamora and 2nd Place for The Writing Center PSA (Sam Zamora , Juan Garcia) ; Best Sportscast Audio: 3rd Place, November 2021 ( Khalid Alhareth , Kyle Owen ); Best Sports Show Audio: 3rd Place, Bobcat Radio May 6, 2022 ( Gage Sutton , Nolan Phillips , Jacob Aromy , Jaysen Collins ); and Best Sports Play-by-Play Audio: 4th Place, San Marcos vs. Round Rock Westwood College of Fine Arts andCollege of Fine Arts and Communication | 15 High School High School Basketball Playoffs Round 1 - February 22, 2022 ( Gage Sutton , Jacob Aromy , Justin Brown . Paul Villagran , Debra Price , and Jennifer Scharlach joined J.R. Gonzales from TAMACC and Audrey Allison from Kennesaw State University to present at the PRSA Educators Academy Summit in November. The panel explored how service learning sparks engagement and builds cultural awareness for public relations students. Service learning involves students in projects with community partners that allow them to develop skills and connect with diverse communities. Jon Zmikly led virtual reality demonstrations for high schoolers at the 15th annual Texas State AITP IT Symposium. Almost 300 students from 12 Texas high schools attended the event and participated in a range of presentations such as Women in IT, Network Administration, Spyware/Malware, Android Game Development, AI and more. Students learned how Zmikly uses virtual reality and immersive technology in his courses to teach new forms of storytelling. [1] STUDENT ACCOLADES Ellie Mayfield, traveled to Indianapolis to represent Texas State’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication program at the 95th National FFA Convention on October 27, 2022. ALUMNI ACCOLADES The fall 2022 Speaker Series in Dr. Cindy Royal's Digital Media Innovation capstone course included DMI alumni Juan Garcia Jimenez (DMI '20), web developer at Gannett; Ashley Romo (DMI '20), content and engagement specialist at OJO; Anne Cox (DMI '20), production manager at Austin Woman magazine, recently moved to sales operations content coordinator at SXSW; and Breanna McMurray (DMI '19) website support resident, Madison Tetrault (DMI '21), web project manager resident and Wren Valles (DMI '21), web developer resident at Blackhawk Digital Marketing. [3] The series concluded on Nov. 15 with Blake Kotrla (DMI '17) who is chief technology officer for Hill Country Studios, a virtual production, television, film and streaming studio planned for San Marcos. We're proud of the accomplishments of these alumni and greatly appreciate their time informing and advising students.
