Richardson. Dr. Martin McCain , Professor of Trombone, recently performed as guest bass trombonist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on a program that included Bruckner’s Symphony no. 4 and Magnus Lindberg’s Piano Concerto no. 3 with Yuja Wang. While in Toronto, Martin was in residence at the University of Toronto where he led a brass chamber music masterclass, trombone masterclass, taught lessons in addition to performing a recital. He also was invited to be guest bass trombonist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where they performed the live soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets . [1] Dr. Kevin Mooney , Senior Lecturer of Musicology, was invited to present at the East Texas Historical Association Conference in Nacogdoches on October 14. The title of his talk was “ Louise Tobin (b. 1918): A Texas Jazz Singer and the Last Surviving Musician from the Swing Era.” Ms. Tobin is the subject of Dr. Mooney’s book Texas Jazz Singer: Louise Tobin in the Golden Age of Swing and Beyond (2021), which received a Certificate of Merit i n the 2022 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Award for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research in Jazz. She passed away on November 26, 2022, at the age of 104. [2] Dr. Kevin Mooney's current research focuses on jazz history with particular emphasis on the music and careers of vocalist Louise Tobin and clarinetist Peanuts Hucko. His book, Texas Jazz Singer: Louise Tobin in the Golden Age of Swing and Beyond was published by Texas A&M University Press in 2021.
