JOHN FLEMING This month’s cover celebrates “Bobcats on Broadway,” the 10 alumni who appeared on Broadway in calendar year 2022 as well as the 10 alumni who performed in Broadway national tours (pp.24-25). Our other retrospective, “Faculty Authored Books,” recognizes the 7 faculty members who published books during the 2021-22 school year (pp.22). In addition, 11 faculty were awarded Research Enhancement Grants, helping the College be the 2nd most awarded unit in FY23 (pp.21). Individual accolades include Courtney Cone winning a $100,000 grant from the Art for Justice fund, while Jeff Davis and M. Wright each earned multiple commissions for their design work (pp.3). Beverly Penn’s work was acquired by the Yale University Art Gallery, while Adetty Pérez de Miles, Joey Fauerso, Mark Menjivar and the Borderland Collective all published new books (pp.5) Alum Ryan Runcie won the Creative Genius Award from the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Business Awards (p.6). In Communication Studies, Tricia Burke, Michael Burns, Kristen Farris, and alum Emily Pollard all won Top Paper Awards while Elizabeth Eger won the 2022 Anita Taylor Outstanding Published Article Award (p. 9). Roseann Mandziuk gave the LBJ Museum’s Annual Fall Lecture (p. 9). In Dance, Christa Oliver’s choreography is featured in Zach Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, while Ana Baer’s video dances are now screening in Australia, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Kosovo, Russia, and the US (pp.12). Dance alum Cherie Carson’s Water Spirit has screened in 28 film festivals and won 17 awards, while Wendy Hassenpflug has published a new book (p.12). Vanessa Higgins Joyce led a group of Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas fellows in a co-authored publication (p.14). KTSW students won 5 awards in 4 categories at the College Broadcasters National Student Electronic Media Convention (p.15). In Music, Kyle Glaser published a new book, while Kevin Mooney received a Certificate of Merit for his 2021 book on Louise Tobin (p.16 ). Students Elma Garcia and Sophia Gonzalez were finalists in the Vargas Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition, with Elma winning first place in the College Division (p.17). In Theatre, Bryan Poyser won 2 awards at Film Festivals, while undergraduate Julia Cabrera won a fellowship with the USITT Gateway Program and graduate student Jennifer Gonzalez won the Sherry Wagner- Henry Board Fellowship (p.19).
