JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Jenny Buschhorn has been named to the National Education Executive Committee for the American Advertising Federation (AAF). She attended the AAF NEEC meeting in Chicago. Buschhorn met with Advertising faculty from around the country to establish policies and procedures for the organization’s premiere event and to share ideas for how to best connect educators and advertising professionals. Daniel Carter published an article on online labor and barriers to collective action in First Monday . Daniel also published an article titled “The Only Job a Robot Couldn’t Do” in The Outline. Michael Devlin was the second place recipient of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Most Promising Professor Award. Dr. Kelly Kaufhold and Dan Seed presented their research, “Health Belief Model Applied to Medicare Enrollment: Using Theory to Better Reach the Rural Poor,” at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication convention in August. The five-member 2018 Bateman National Case Study Competition team has been selected. This year’s client is With Purpose, a nonprofit organization that focuses on cancer advocacy in children. The national competition is organized through the Public Relations Student Society of America. Chuck Kaufman is the faculty adviser. Gilbert D. Martinez taught a new short course, Digital Concepts: Cyberlaw, in Fall 2017, and took his students to the Dell Social Media Listening Command Center in Round Rock for a tour and discussion about legal issues involving the internet and social media with Dell’s legal director, Ryan Garcia, in September. [ 1 ] SJMC students at Dell with Ryan Garcia Olga Mayoral Wilson with student from the mentoring session Exonerated Death Row inmate Anthony Graves with journalism students 12 | October | College News 1 2 3 Olga Mayoral Wilson , APR, Fellow PRSA, was selected to serve as a mentor for two of the eight students who were awarded a grant by the PRSA Foundation to attend the PRSSA National Conference held in Boston, October 7-10. Wilson met with the students who have a serious interest in the field of Public Relations. Eager to learn more about the professional expectations and the opportunities in a field where diversity and inclusion still need to move forward, the mentoring session provided for a robust and candid exchange of ideas, questions and road map. [ 2 ] In September, Jon Zmikly presented “Intro to Responsive Design” for the San Marcos meetup group Community Codes. The organization meets monthly for networking, workshops and presentations focused on coding and other digital topics. Researchers in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication are excited to announce a $636,280 contract with Texas Health and Human Services to craft, distribute and test messages aimed at Medicare- eligible Texans. You can see our public service announcements on Texas television stations now, to be followed by web and social media messages – all in English and Spanish. This project is supported by the federal Medicare Improvement for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) and is aimed at helping improve Medicare enrollment in Texas. SJMC faculty experts in advertising, journalism, public relations, electronic, digital and social media will participate in the campaign, which will include crafting, distributing and testing messages through multiple platforms. This project builds on previous research done by SJMC faculty in 2015. STUDENT ACCOLADES Seven SJMC students have been accepted into the 2017 Cox Media Day in the Life program, which invites select college students to spend a day with the Austin American-Statesman , a Cox property, to learn about media operations and to participate in a product development competition. The students are: Kathleen Burrell , Connor Brown , Denise Cervantes , Robert Edwards , Cameron Goodall , Taeler Kallmerten , and David Austin Sanders . Fourteen PRSSA students traveled to Boston for the National PRSSA Conference. While at the conference, students networked with more than 2,500 public relations professionals from across the United States. While at the conference, the chapter leadership presented bids to host a 2018 PRSSA regional conference as well as the 2018 national conference in Austin. The PRSSA selection board announced that Texas State was selected to host a regional conference and the chapter is a finalist to host the national conference next October. Bobcat Promotions, the student-run strategic communications firm, managed social media and produced videos for the CoSearch program. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Matt Shoewalter was awarded the D&AD New Blood Pencil Award which identifies, showcases and nurtures tomorrow’s young creative talented superstars. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 13 OCTOBER 10, 2017 Exonerated Death Row inmate Anthony Graves spoke to journalism students as part of the Common Experience. [ 3] Professor Kym Fox received a grant that enabled her to pay Graves a small honorarium to speak to the Journalism Project class on the same day he gave this fall’s main Common Experience lecture. The topic of Graves’ talk to the journalism class was Death Row and the Media. He spoke of the journalist’s role as watch dog and urged students to seek the truth while remaining neutral. After his presentation, Graves gave interviews to members of campus media, including the University Star , KTSW and Bobcat Update. DEATH ROW AND MEDIA
