MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES Thomas Clark traveled to northwestern Czech Republic to do composition research in the land of Smetana and Dvořák, following up on his 1990s study of Janácek’s music in the Moravian east of the country. A key part of this visit was to the Lidice Memorial Gardens and Art Gallery, where he presented his newest composition, Lidice Remembered , and explored the extensive archive documenting the 1942 atrocity there. Another visit explored Blaník Mountain, inspiration for the final part of Smetana’s monumental symphonic poem, Má vlast . In August, Trio 488, oboist Ian Davidson , pianist Jason Kwak , and bassoonist Daris Hale , performed in Seoul, S. Korea with the WE Soloists as part of the Seoul Arts Center Series. [ 1 ] The concert took place at the Forest Hall and included works featuring Trio 488 and collaborative works with the Korean musicians. Kyle Glaser [ 2 ] has been appointed as National Vice President for Professional Relations for Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Band Sorority, a co-educational service sorority. The sorority, headquartered at the historic Stillwater Station in Stillwater, Oklahoma, numbers over 3,500 active members in 145 active chapters, and over 40,000 alumni. Since 1946, Tau Beta Sigma has been recognized by Kappa Kappa Psi as “an equal affiliated organization with a parallel purpose, function and role in the college and university band setting,” and the two organizations hold joint conventions. The two organizations contribute to a national publication, The Podium . Kyle is a recipient of a Foundations of Excellence Award from the Texas State University Student Foundation. The foundation hosted their first annual Foundations of Excellence ceremony on April 14, 2005 in the LBJ Student Center. The purpose of the event was to allow members of the Student Foundation to honor faculty and staff who had made a significant impact on their lives while students at Texas State. It has since become one of the Student Foundation’s major events. Glaser is one of ten faculty/staff members who will be honored. Daris Hale, Ian Davidson, and Jason Kwak in Seoul, S. The inaugural concert featured a variety of musical talents from 5 different countries, including Texas State University School of Music alumna, Sophia Kuyenga . In 2014, Daris was the co-author of a 3-year, multi-million dollar grant from the European Union to create a permanent center for preservation, research, and promotion of Africa’s unique cultural heritage. It provides opportunities for tourists, local communities, and school-age children to experience and learn about the arts. The Cultural Arts Centre is the only facility of this type in all of East Africa. Dr. Martin McCain completed his first of three guest-artist residencies in Missouri. He performed a recital at Southwest Baptist University in addition to presenting a low brass clinic, jazz ensemble clinic, and entrepreneurship lecture for the department. McCain also presented a trombone master class at Missouri State University and worked with the MSU Trombone Choir. Todd Oxford served as adjudicator for the 2017 ENKOR International Music Competition – Woodwinds and Brass, Düsseldorf, Germany. He also went on tour with Duo 35 performing at NACWPI National Conference in Alabama, with solo performances at Sam Houston State University, Houston Baptist University, and Lamar University in Beaumont, and a master class for Friendswood ISD.
