McWilliams 3 Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play , presented by Texas State University’s Department of Teatre and Dance 16 | October | College News THEATRE Acting, Musical Theatre, Per formance and Production, Teacher Certif ication in Theatre, Technical Production, & Theatre FACULTY ACCOLADES Tightly Wound , a flm by Shelby Hadden , won the Doc’Anims 2018 competition at Animatou, an international festival. Te award was presented to Ms. Hadden in Geneva, Switzerland in mid-October. Te flm was also chosen as the ofcial selection at the prestigious New Orleans Film Festival. Kaitlin Hopkins launched the website LivingMentalWellness.com, which she co-founded with Texas State faculty Dr. Marian Houser and Dr. Hillary Cauthen . LMW ofers an evidence-based educational program to enhance mental wellness through an integrated scientifc life skills model. Laura Lane has been nominated for a B. Iden Payne award for “Featured Actress in a Comedy” for her role as Agamomnem in the Rude Mechanicals production of Fixing Troilus and Cressida . [1] Te production was also nominated for “Outstanding Production of a Comedy” and “Best Original Script,” and “Large Cast Performance in Scripted Teatre.” WilliamW. Lewis authored the chapter “Approaches to ‘Audience-Centered’ Performance: Designing Interaction for the iGeneration” which appears in the book New Directions in Teaching Teatre Arts edited by Anne Fliotsos and Gail Medford for Palgrave. Te chapter presents a new methodology for teaching collaborative and interdisciplinary theatre making focusing on the learning styles of digital natives. Sarah EC Maines will be lighting Terrance McNally’s 80th birthday jubilee featuring Broadway legend Chita Rivera, Donna Murphy, Oscar and Golden Globe winner F. Murray Abraham, Emmy winner Richard Tomas, Tony, Obie and Drama Desk winner John Glover at ZACHTeatre this November. She has also been contracted to light ZACHTeatre’s return engagements of A Christmas Carol: A Rockin’ Musical this November and Ann, the Ann Richards story , Summer 2019. Brandon R. McWilliams designed costumes for the world premiere of Te Boatman by Alex Moggridge at the Flint Repertory Teatre. [2] Toby Minor was nominated for a B. Iden Payne award for “Fight Choreography” for two productions: Bad Jews , produced by City Teatre Company, and Booth’s Richard III , produced by Hidden Room at the Harry Ransom Center and the Austin Scottish Rite Teatre. Chuck Ney gave two lectures in Buenos Aires, Argentina: “Aesthetic Values: Directorial Relationships with Shakespeare” and “North American Directors’ Approaches to Tablework and Staging.” He also met with local artistic directors after attending their productions. All of the events were hosted by Fundación Shakespeare Argentina. Phillip Owen served as an English teacher, music instructor, and guitarist at the Wust Sommerschule for Language, Literature, Drama & Music in Germany this summer. He also designed sound and composed music for Dancing at Lughnasa at Everyman Teatre in Baltimore, MD. Tis design was submitted and selected to be exhibited at the 2019 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space next summer as well as at USITT next Spring. Last summer, Jerry Ruiz was commissioned by the Public Teater to develop a Spanish-language musical adaptation of Romeo & Juliet along with singer-songwriter Sofa Rei. STUDENT ACCOLADES Corey James Bogue (B.F.A. Technical Production) worked as Junior Carpenter at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah this summer. Te Wolves , a production by Hyde Park Teatre was nominated for a B. Iden Payne award for “Outstanding Production of a Drama” and “Large Cast Performance in Scripted Teatre.” Senior B.F.A. in Acting major Kelsey Buckley was a cast member. Jackson Cosgrove (B.F.A. Acting) is working in No Exit at St. Phillips College. MR.BURNS,APOST-ELECTRICPLAY Texas State University’s Department of Teatre and Dance presented Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play written by Anne Washburn, score by Ashleigh Stone, and lyrics by Anne Washburn. Under the direction of graduate student Isaac Byrne , the production opened October 2 and ran until October 7 in the Patti Strickel Harrison Teatre. It played to 96% capacity with four sold out performances. Mr. Burns, A Post- Electric Play is the story of survival and reinvention of civilization in a post- apocalyptic world. Anne Washburn’s intriguing comedy explores the interplay between technological collapse, pop culture and our drive to survive. [3] College of Fine Arts and Communication | 17
