Te performance titled “Beautiful Sounds,” was a laptop septet soundscape celebrating the sights and sounds of the San Marcos River. Te work was composed and realized by all members of the ensemble and consisted of sectionalized, structured improvisations utilizing recorded sound-samples taken from the San Marcos River. Tese samples were performed via real-time manipulations on certain parameters with real-time controlled digital video art. Ensemble members included senior Luke Frost and graduate students Stephen Adkisson, Stephan Arce-Penedo, Adam Koch, Ella Pedrozo , and Tomas Torres . Te ensemble is directed by Senior Lecturer of Music Richard D. Hall. [2 & 3] Te Florida Orchestra gave the world premiere of Michael Ippolito's new work, a la fenestra , which was commissioned for the orchestra’s opening weekend of concerts for the 2021-2022 season. Ippolito found inspiration for his new work in the Covid environment, and linked it to Petrarch’s poem about love during another epidemic, the Black Death. Te music is abstract, but suggests the poet sitting at an open window, a lone voice waiting to connect with others during a troubled time. Scored for strings, percussion and three brass ensembles that were placed around the theater, Ippolito depicted the isolation many experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also the urge to reach out and connect across distance.
