COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION OCTOBERR ISSUE | FAL L 202 1 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Te faculty, staf, students and alumni of the College of Fine Arts and Communication continue to earn accolades nationally and internationally. Most notably, our Dance Division was ranked as the #1 Best Value and #2 Best Quality undergraduate program in the country by College Factual (p.9). Exemplifying the quality and diversity of dance’s oferings, they hosted a master class by a former Paul Taylor dancer, presented research at Rutgers, and both faculty and alumni screened work at the COCO Dance Festival in Trinidad (pp.8-9). Art and Design faculty presented their research and creative work in Atlanta, Denver, Brooklyn, Milwaukee, Ontario, Orlando, Miami, and across Texas (pp.2- 3). Art and Design alum Michael Menchaca was named one of the “15 most compelling Latinx artists working today” and received a fellowship from the Mellon Foundation and Ford Foundation (p.3). In Communication Studies, Maureen Keeley received the Bernard Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship for Distinguished Service in Family Communication from the National Communication Association (p.6). Ann Burnette and Wayne Kraemer appeared on NPR’s award-winning podcast “Journeys of Discovery” (p.6) In Journalism and Mass Communication, the University Star received four national fnalist awards from the College Media Association (p.11). SJMC also hosted their annual Mass Comm Week with over 20 sessions and nearly 40 speakers (p. 11). In Music, the Florida Orchestra premiered Michael Ippolito’s newest composition (p.13), while Dimitar Ninov presented research in Russia and a new composition in Bulgaria (p.12). Richard Novak’s song cycle “Stations of Mychal” had its latest performance in Rochester, New York (p.12). In Teatre, Ana Martinez’s book was one of six fnalists for the Teatre Library Association’s George Freedley Memorial Award (p.14).
