ALUMNI ACCOLADES Teri Daley has been named vice president of Corpo- rate Communications at H&R Block. She has previ- ously held leadership positions with global PR agen- cies, such as Ketchum, and Fortune 100 technology companies, including Microsoft, Samsung, HTC, and Huawei. Malik Mingo was named Best on Air Talent for 2023 by the Press Club of New Orleans. #FACULTY SPOTLIGHT JOURNAL ISM AND MASS COMMUNICAT ION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Jennifer Scharlach was featured in September 20 episode of Texas State University Marketing’s Podcast: Office Hours. Office Hours can be heard on Spotify or Apple Music. Daniel Carter and Kym Fox have been named fellows of the Translational Health Research Center for their work with Texas Community Health News (TCHN). Carter and Fox explained the mission of TCHN at a Health and Resilience Research Network Meeting entitled “Disseminating Research: From Publication to the Public” in late September. [1] Kym Fox presented workshops in Fort Worth and the East Texas town of Liden in partnership with Tarleton State University’s Center for Community Journalism. Journalists from primarily weekly and small daily newspapers attended the presentations centered around Texas Community Health News, a collaboration between the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Translational Health Research Center. Fox is co-director of Texas Community Health News with Dr. Daniel Carter. Nandini Bhalla has been selected for the DEF Con Scholars Grant. This allowed her to attend a full day of virtual institute to get insight into digital ethnic studies. She attended this virtual institute two weeks back and now, she is officially a Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium Scholar, Mellon Foundation. Eraldo “Dino” Chiecchi was featured on the front page of the The University Star in a feature story about his book Josue: A Young Man’s Life Lost to Suicide . Reporter Haley Velasco interviewed several people for her article, including Gaby Lucero, Josue’s mother who Kym Fox and Daniel Carter presented at the Health and Resilience Research Network meeting Jessica James attended the Society of Professional Journalists National Conference Public Relations students attended the Public Relations Student Society of America international conference 10 | October 2023 | College News 1 2 3 College of Fine Arts and Communication | 11 praised Chiecchi’s efforts keeping her son’s memory alive. Chiecchi also organized the annual visit by nearly 50 students from Laredo’s Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications & Fine Arts on Oct. 4. Among the daylong events, Trevino students visited the television studio in Alkek 1, listened to a panel discussion of current SJMC students about their collegiate experience, were treated to lunch at the Harris Dining Hall and learned about admission into Texas State University. Adjunct Professor and IRE Executive Director Diana “DeeDee” Fuentes gave the keynote speech after lunch. The visit is sponsored by the D.D. Charitable Trust of Laredo and SJMC. Larry Carlson was interviewed by KUT Radio's Jimmy Maas about the Texas-OU football rivalry for the station's presentation of the ATXplained Live Show at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. Carlson teaches electronic media and writes for The History of Longhorn Sports site. He also hosts podcasts featuring his interviews with former Texas players and notables from within the University of Texas Department of Athletics. STUDENT ACCOLADES Lucciana Choueiry , AnaBelle Elliot and faculty advisor Jessica James attended the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) National Conference in Las Vegas on Sept. 26 to Oct. 1. Students met with a variety of media professionals, including "Good Morning America's" Gio Benitez. [2] Public relations students got the chance in October to explore the latest industry trends and best practices at the PRSA and PRSSA international conference in Nashville along with Sandy Pantlik, Texas State VP for marketing and communications, PRSSA faculty advisor Paul Villagran , and PR program coordinator Debra Price . [3] DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES Texas State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication hosted Mass Comm Week. This year's event featured an impressive lineup of panels, renowned alumni and media professionals. Eraldo "Dino" Chiecchi is an associate professor of practice. He earned his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Texas at El Paso in his hometown. He received his Master’s of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 2021 also from UTEP after writing a book titled “Josue” he published in 2022. He began his academic teaching career at UTEP in 2016, specializing in newswriting and photography.
