MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES TrevCo Music published Ian Davidson ’s (oboe) original composition for oboe solo, de Kooning’s New York . This is the third work of Davidson’s published by TrevCo and is part of a long-term publishing contract. The work is inspired by paintings done by Willem de Kooning in 1955: The Springs, Police Gazette, Woman-Ochre, and Interchange . This work is the third installment in a larger project, “North American Masters,” that envisions a series of works for oboe solo inspired by works of visual artists. The first installment, Scenes at The Ranch , inspired by paintings of Georgia O’Keefe, was published in 2021; the second installment, Five Works of Jackson Pollock , inspired by paintings of Jackson Pollock, was published in 2022. Dr. Davidson appeared as guest artist in a pair of concerts as part of the 2023-2024 Subscription Concert Season of La Follia Austin Baroque. Davidson performed Hurník’s Sonata da camera for flute, oboe, cello, and harpsichord and Chris Lastovicka’s Láska for oboe d’amore and harpsichord, with Anton Nel. [1] Hank Hehmsoth and Keith Winking contributed to the forthcoming PBS documentary on San Marcos- born jazz legend Eddie Durham ( Wham-Re-Bop-Boom- Bam: The Swing Jazz of Eddie Durham ) as advisor, music consultant, cast member and artist. Lynn Ledbetter led an American String Teachers Association Resource Series Webinar entitled “Putting the ASTA String Syllabus to Work for You and Your Students!” on October 10, 2023. Ledbetter, president of the Texas State University system council of faculty senates and chair of the Texas State University Faculty Senate, attended the Texas Council of Faculty Senates fall meeting in San Antonio on Sept. 29 and 30 to present the TXST Roundup Report. The event was attended by representatives of every faculty senate in the state of Texas. Ian Davison appeared as a guest artist at the Subscription Concert Season of La Follia Austine Baroque Lynn Ledbetter presented workshops for Katy ISD Jordan Stern with Sean Starr at the premier of Art is Love: Nepal 12 | October 2023 | College News 1 2 3 Along with School of Music string faculty, she presented workshops for forty violins from Katy ISD on September 15 and 16, 2023. The event was hosted by Obra D. Tompkins High School in Katy. [2] Ledbetter performed with the Mid-Texas Symphony Orchestra in Seguin on September 10 and 11. On October 14, she judged the prestigious University of Houston Moore’s School of Music Concerto Competition for Strings and Voice in Houston. Ledbetter was one of three on the string panel for the preliminaries and for the finals. This competition is held every two years. Suzanne Ramo joined the faculty at Music Fest Perugia in July 2023, teaching master classes and private voice lessons and performing a recital of songs and duets with soprano Twyla Robinson in the Sala dei Notari. Nico Schüler co-presented a paper on St. Vincent’s “Cruel” at a Colloquium on “Collaborative Interpretations of Multimodal Expression in Popular Music Video” for the British Audio-Visual Research Network. He also presented on “Digital Tools for Rediscovering Late-19th Century African- American Music” at the International Colloquium on Computational and Cognitive Musicology in Athens, Greece. Last but not least, Dr. Schüler gave a paper on “How ‘Blue’ Are Blue Notes? A Methodological Case Study” as well as a joint paper with two German scholars on “Analyzing Performance Aspects in Recordings of a Flute Partita by J. S. Bach” at an international online workshop on methods of computational performance practice research. Jordan Stern composed, arranged, and performed music for the documentary Art is Love: Nepal , produced by Exploredinary, an award-winning creative agency based in Dallas. This film documented the travel of sign painter Sean Starr as he explored Nepal and interviewed local artisans who demonstrated how they create their art. Stern attended the premier of the documentary in Calvert, TX this October. The producers have submitted the documentary to major film festivals and cable television. [3] Vanguel Tangarov has been awarded the highest recognition by the Encyclopedic Chronicle of the Bulgarian Professional School of Wind and Percussion College of Fine Arts and Communication | 133 Instruments . His name is now featured in the latest edition of the Bulgarian professional encyclopedia, alongside esteemed contemporary and historical musicians, in honor of his exceptional contributions and unwavering dedication to the field. Tangarov performed a recital and conducted a master class at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. One of the standout pieces in the recital’s repertoire was Béla Bartók’s Contrasts , an emblematic chamber music piece performed in collaboration with Dr. Miroslav Hristov, Professor of Violin at UTK, and collaborative piano Ekaterina Tangarova. The program also featured masterpieces for violin, clarinet, and piano by Aram Khachaturian and Giancarlo Menotti. Dr. Tangarov presented a clarinet master class, sharing his expertise with the clarinet students at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. STUDENT ACCOLADES Martin Kesuma received the Gold Prize in Artist Division of the 2023 Vancouver International Piano Competition. [4] Members of Mariachi Nueva Generación and Mariachi Lince de Oro will study and perform with Mariachi Cobre and Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán at the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference in November 2023. Six weeks later, Mariachi Nueva Generación will perform onstage with Mariachi Sol de México on their “A Merry-Achi Christmas” performance for ACL Live at The Moody Theater in Austin. TXST mariachi has been invited to be the sole exhibition group at the 2024 University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Mariachi Festival in February 2024. Mariachi Nueva Generación will perform on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening. Mariachi Lince de Oro will perform on Friday and Saturday afternoon. This presence at the UIL festival will introduce TXST mariachi to more than 1,000 of the best high school mariachi students in Texas.
