LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING In late September, our iconic Theatre Center flooded due to a broken sprinkler head. Faculty, staff, and students have been working above and beyond to carry on with classes, rehearsals, and productions while the building undergoes remediation and repairs through the end of the semester. They have embodied the resilience and creativity that is a hallmark of the program. · On the cover, Technical Production Theatre alum Tim Chrisman designed and executed the 2023 season kick-off event for the Cleveland Cavaliers. · In Art and Design (pp.2-3), Beverly Penn’s work is featured at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., and Margo Handwerker was recognized by the San Marcos Arts Commission. · In Communication Studies (pp.6-7), Jasmine Austin published her 2nd book and earned the National Communication Association’s Marsha Houston Award. Rebekah Fox received a $100,000 USDA/ Forest Service grant. Alum Tori Miller is now the community partnership chair for Women in Film and Television Austin. · In Dance (p.8), Ana Baer exhibited her screen dances in Japan, Argentina, and Pakistan, while Rebekah Chappell presented her research at the CORPS de Ballet International Conference. Three alumni performed with Blue Lapis Light. · In Journalism and Mass Communication (pp.10- 11), Daniel Carter and Kym Fox have been named fellows of the Translational Health Research Center where they co-direct Texas Community Health News. Nandini Bhalla received a DEFCon Scholars grant via the Mellon Foundation. Alum Teri Daley is now the VP of Corporate Communications at H&R Block, while Malik Mingo was named Best on Air Talent by the Press Club of New Orleans. · In Music (pp.12-15), Ian Davidson published his 3rd collection of oboe compositions, while Hank Hehmsoth and Keith Winking are part of a PBS documentary on San Marcos-born jazz pioneer Eddie Durham. Nico Schüler presented research at three international conference, and Vanguel Tangarov has received career recognition from his native Bulgaria. Alum and current student Martin Kesuma won the Gold Prize at the 2023 Vancouver International Piano Competition. Our mariachi ensembles have been selected to perform alongside three of the top professional mariachi ensembles in the country. Alum Tiana Mortiz is now the Principal Violist with the Central Texas Philharmonic. · In Theatre (pp.16-17), Betty Buckley’s documentary premiers at the Austin Film Festival, and Yong Suk Yoo wrote and directed an interdisciplinary dance performance for the 47th Navaratri Festival. Grad student Emma Hanson designed lights for professional companies in Ohio and Utah. Alum Marianne Bray has a lead anime voice role, while Preston Perez is Hans in the national tour of Frozen . · Finally, the issue closes with a link to our annual College Report. Check it out!
