ART AND DES IGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art 2 | October 2023 | College News FACULTY ACCOLADES Beverly Penn ’s sculpture Maelstrom will be featured in the upcoming exhibition Remix: The Collection at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C, October 2023 - 2025. Her sculptures Fata Morgana , Jacquard , Regna Tria Naturae , Dicephaly , and Naturalia are included in the exhibition Marking Space/ Holding Time at the Irving Art Center. [1] Jimmy Canales is participating in Sculpture Month Houston 2023: The Sleep of Reason exhibition. Organized by curator Volker Eisele, Sculpture Month is a yearly exhibition of sculpture and installations in the SITE Gallery, which is comprised of 34 towering concrete rice silos in the Sawyer Yards. The opening exhibition is closing on December 2nd. Margo Handwerker has been selected by the San Marcos Arts Commission as a 2023 SMarts Award honoree in recognition of the contributions that she has made to the San Marcos arts community. Rebecca Marino curated Parsley Space Rosemary Time and was awarded "Top Five Art events in Texas" on Glasstire. Adetty Pérez de Miles will be presenting her research: Social Justice Art Education: Power, Politics, and Possibilities at the 24th Curriculum & Pedagogy Conference held in State College. She was invited as a book author and guest to attend Beverly Penn's sculpture will be displayed in Washington, D.C. Rebecca Marino curated Parsley Space Rosemary Time The Unsettlements: Moms was featured in multiple articles 1 2 3 President Damphousse’s Celebration of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Work. Liz Rodda , Ana Treviño , and Jennifer Stob wrote a successful Nexus Grant application on behalf of Experimental Response Cinema. The award of $5,000 from the City of Austin's Economic Development Cultural Arts Division will support Experimental Response Cinema as a film programmer's collective devoted to bringing moving image art and artists to the Central Texas region. DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES Texas State Galleries' The Unsettlements: Moms was featured in " Witnessing the Relational in JD Pluecker’s Unsettlements: Moms '" by Xan Murphy for Glasstire . Pluecker's The Unsettlements: Moms was also featured in " 'Linking the legacies': Artist honors moms’ influences through exhibit at TXST" by Carlene Ottah for The University Star . [3] ALUMNI ACCOLADES Anthony Romero has been appointed Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Dartmouth College. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3 Jimmy James Canales is a San Antonio-based artist working in sculpture and expanded media. Canales received his BFA from the Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston, and his MFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His work has been shown throughout the state of Texas as well as nationally, including Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; and Las Cruces, New Mexico. Canales is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, most notably the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Award for Artists (2015), the Tanne Foundation Award (2016) and the Vermont Studio Center Artist Grant (2015). Recently he was selected for the 2018- 2019 Blue Star Contemporary Berlin Residency Program at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, DE.
