Carlson also wrote a retrospective that dealt with UT’s frst football game following the August 1966 mass shooting from the University of Texas tower, and the atmosphere surrounding Austin, the UT campus and that game between Texas and Southern Cal. Carlson covered the Longhorns back in the 1970s as sports director at Austin’s KVET Radio, serving as the host of the football coach’s pre-game show and the post-game locker room show. He continued to write about UT sports during the ‘80s and ‘90s, then served as a co-host of Longhorn Pipeline on San Antonio’s ESPN radio afliate from 2007-2011. Kym Fox was part of a panel presentation at the Excellence in Journalism national conference in Baltimore, MD, in late September. Te group discussed a Society of Professional Journalism initiative to connect professional journalists with scholastic journalism programs around the country. Te initiative is an outgrowth of research and a resulting book produced by the SPJ national education committee, of which Fox is a member. [1] Dr. Salwa Khan is marking a four-year anniversary as producer and host of “Mothering Earth”, a podcast and radio program that is a source for sustainable living news. Te programs airs on Wimberley Valley Radio, Sundays at noon. It is available as a podcast on iTunes, Radio Public and other podcast players. Kelly Kaufhold presented a study, “Mediating Empathy: Te Role of News Consumption in Mitigating Attitudes about Race and Immigration,” at the annual meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, in Washington, D.C., in August. [2] Dr. Cindy Royal has been selected as the university’s nominee for the prestigious Piper Award. Te Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award Foundation annually honors ten professors in Texas colleges and universities for outstanding achievement in the teaching profession. Tese awards will be announced later this academic year. Te Texas State University Piper Professor Committee also selected Dr. Royal to receive an Everette Swinney Faculty Senate Excellence in Teaching Award. Jon Zmikly hosted a virtual reality demonstration for the local meetup group Community Codes. Normally, adults attend the meetings; however, at this particular session, the group was joined by several elementary schoolers. Jon taught a session on how to build a virtual environment using the software Unity and Steam VR. He also led a virtual reality workshop at Alkek Library as part of the university’s Innovation Week. With assistance from professor Dr. Cindy Royal and graduate students Sean Smith and Nicole Jones , the team showed students three levels of immersion using the HTC Vive, Oculus Go and other VR headsets and hardware. Students from many diferent majors and departments experienced immersive storytelling, virtual games and other innovative applications. Te event was also reported by Spectrum News. STUDENT ACCOLADES Rosa Ambriz , Sarah Atterbury , Charlcee Cervantez , Corey Dockery and Saul Gray , senior Public Relations students, have been selected for this year’s Texas State University Bateman team. Te national case study competition team, organized through the Public Relations Student Society of America, will develop a campaign that focuses on diversity in the public relations feld and promote the book Diverse Voices: Profles in Leadership . Last year’s Texas State team won a national honorable mention award. Two Texas State School of Journalism and Mass Communication students have been selected to complete internships with the Austin Spurs. Aalyssa Carrillo and Parker Rhea , both Electronic Media majors, will begin their respective internships in the latter part of October. Carrillo and Rhea are the frst Texas State students selected to the initial internship program which was created between the university and the Austin Spurs toward the end of last year. Carrillo and Rhea were selected from among 25 applicants for the internship opportunity. Tey will receive college credit hours upon completion of their internship responsibilities. Graduate student Eun Jeong Lee and professor Kelly Kaufhold published “Journalistic Professionalism and User Motivations for Snapchat Video” in the International Journal of Interactive Communication Systems and Technologies in January of 2018. Te Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) student chapter at Texas State attended the 2018 Excellence in Journalism (EIJ) conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Journalism students Victoria Vasquez and Naomi Wick joined SJMC Lecturers Kym Fox and Jessica James for the three-day professional development conference. Sessions included panelists from the Capital Gazette publishing board, covering the #MeToo Movement, Midterm Elections in the Era of Trump and Lessons in Unique Storytelling with Steve Hartman of CBS. Victoria Vasquez represented the SPJ student chapter at Texas State, serving as a delegate to vote on bylaw amendments and meeting resolutions. SCHOOL ACCOLADES Twenty-nine SJMC faculty and students attended the Online News Association (ONA) conference in Austin Sept. 13-15. Faculty also participated in the conference program, with Cindy Royal co-organizing a student pre-conference at UT and moderating a product management workshop, and Dale Blasingame and Sara Shields speaking on a panel about drone certifcation. Te concepts addressed at ONA included artifcial intelligence, use of data, virtual reality and the emerging verifcation platform blockchain. Discussions around revenue generation, media sustainability, misinformation, trust in media and audience engagement were evident throughout the conference. [3] Te Journalism and Mass Communication Robert Glaves chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America co-hosted with the University of Texas PRSSA chapter the 2018 Public Relations Student Society of America National Conference in Austin on October 5-9. Te 5-person National Conference committee led by Texas State Bobcat Alejandro Garcia worked for over a year to plan every detail of the fve-day conference that saw more than 850 students from across the nation attend. Te students were guided in their eforts by the PRSSA national staf as well as the chapter’s faculty advisor, Assistant Professor of Practice Paul Villagran .
