JOHN FLEMING On the cover is Sound Recording Technology alumnus Brad Engleking as he receives his Emmy for Best Sound Design (see p.17). Brad exemplifies the excellence faculty, students, and alumni are achieving. Art and Design faculty continue their extensive exhibition schedule as Tommy Fitzpatrick and Barry Stone have solo shows, while Jennifer Datchuk, Soomin Remmler, Liz Rodda, Mark Menjivar, Brian Johnson, and Jason Reed are all part of different group shows (pp.2-3). Genro Solis Rivero won three design awards, and alum Shelby Sult was featured in British Vogue (pp.2-3). Communication Studies faculty are publishing at a prolific rate. Tricia Burke and Ann Burnette published multiple articles, while Elizabeth Eger, Rebekah Fox, Maureen Keeley, Manu Pokharel, Lindsay Timmerman, and master’s student Kirara Nagatsuka all published articles (pp.6- 7). In addition, Marian Houser published the third edition of her Handbook of Instructional Communication (p.7). In Dance, LeAnne Smith oversaw her 38th and final concert as Artistic Director of Opening Door Dance Theatre and choreographed the final number that featured alumni and faculty (pp. 10-11). Ana Baer’s screendance IXCHEL won a Best Experimental Film award in India and Austin; some of her other films screened in Paraguay, Venezuela, Brazil, Trinidad, and the UK (pp.10-11). In Journalism and Mass Communication, Nandini Bhalla published an article, while Dino Chiecchi hosted nearly 50 students from Laredo as part of our annual Mass Communication Week (p. 12). KTSW inducted five new members into their Hall of Fame (p.13). In Music, Alec Scherer published an article, Martin McCain completed two residencies, Ames Asbell was a guest artist, and Craig Aamot led a Choral Festival in Ireland (pp.14-15). Music alumnus Donald Boomgaarden is president at St. Joseph’s University, while Emilee Biles is an assistant sound designer on Broadway (pp.16). In Theatre, Cheri Prough DeVol and Trad Burns designed at major regional theatres, Bryan Poyser’s short film screened at eight film festivals, and Tobie Minor was nominated for a B. Iden Payne Award (pp.18-19). Multiple students and alumni had films selected for screenings at film festivals, while alum Nic Ortiz stars in Zach Theatre’s current production (pp.19-20). Alum Chas Harvey plays the title role in The Actors’ Gang 40th anniversary revival of Ubu the King ; the production is directed by Tim Robbins, who played the title role in their 1982 inaugural production (p. 20). Finally, thanks to TXST President Kelly Damphousse who joined our National Communication Association honor society for a local trivia competition (p.8). My gratitude and congratulations to all!
