JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Larry Carlson, was invited by Texas State head coach Everett Withers to put on a media training workshop for the Bobcat team, and did so the week before the football team’s annual Media Day. Some of the Cats’ top players, including Gabe Schrade, Easy Anyama, Bryan London and James Sherman, joined Carlson in presenting sample interviews -- with do’s and don’ts -- for the players and coaches. Earlier in the summer, Carlson worked for the Austin American-Statesman in providing preseason football coverage from the Southeastern Conference Media Days in Hoover, Alabama. Carlson also provided live content for KTSW after participating in group interviews with Alabama coach Nick Saban, various All-America players and other SEC coaches. He later sent pictures of Texas State alumnus and National League All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to KTSW during Major League Baseball action between Goldschmidt’s Arizona Diamondbacks and the Atlanta Braves. Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce and Dr. Mike Devlin presented their study “Transnational media in a resurgent nationalist movement era: the role of identity in audience’s national and transnational media evaluation” at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication convention, in August. Dr. Cindy Royal Students in the KTSW 89.9 studio Training workshop for the Documenting Hate project 10 | September | College News 1 2 3 (Finding Photo) Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce , Jessica James , and former graduate student Zahra Khani presented their study “TV and Web Cultivating Health Perceptions among older Latinos in Texas” at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication convention. Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce was named Kopenhaver Center Fellow at national educator conference (AEJMC) in August. Dr. Cindy Royal [ 1 ] presented her paper Managing Digital Products in a Newsroom Context at the International Symposium on Online Journalism in Austin. The paper is published in the #ISOJ Journal . Additionally, a book entitled Global Journalism Education in the 21st Century was launched at ISOJ and included Royal’s chapter “Coding the Curriculum: Journalism Education for the Digital Age.” College of Fine Arts and Communication | 9 Cindy Royal , Dale Blasingame and Jon Zmikly received a Teaching and Learning Technology Innovation Grant from Texas State Instructional Technologies Support for $5000 for equipment to support their project Going Outdoors with Emerging Technologies in Communication. They purchased live streaming cameras and virtual reality/360 video gear to support experience-learning projects in the Spring. SCHOOL ACCOLADES KTSW 89.9 [ 2 ] is a finalist for two College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI) national student production awards. KTSW was nominated for best public service announcement for its “Graduation Confetti PSA.” Both awards are in the audio category. The winners will be announced at the CBI National Student Electronic Media Convention in San Antonio November 2-4, 2017. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication hosted a weekend training workshop for the Documenting Hate project August 19-20. [ 3] Texas State is one of five journalism schools taking part in the project, which seeks to collect and verify reports of hate to create a national database for use by journalists, researchers and civil rights organizations. Documenting Hate is spearheaded by ProPublica, which had a reporter on campus for the training. Students from Texas State, Wake Forest, CUNY, Cal-Berkeley and the University of Miami also attended the weekend workshop, which was held in the Center for Communication, Collaboration and Creativity. #DOCUMENTINGHATEPROJECT 11
