“Reactance to fact checking: Facebook users’ evaluations of and intentions to share fake news” at the annual meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Washington, DC. Holly Wise , a Fulbright Scholar teaching solutions journalism at Mount Carmel College in Bangalore, India, gave a talk on solutions journalism at the International Conference on Public Policy Afairs on September 4. In the six weeks Wise has been working in India, she has given solutions journalism workshops to 160 frst-year journalism students, organized a monthly meet-up for Bangalore journalists, and organized and hosted regular meet-ups with Fulbright Student Scholars in Bangalore. Current and past KTSW 89.9 staf members are fnalists for 7 national awards this fall. Tese awards include -- four for College Broadcasters, Inc. in the Best Documentary/Public Afairs Audio, Best Promo Video, Best Promo Audio and Best PSA Audio categories, two for the College Media Association in the Best Radio Newscast and Best Radio Promo/PSA categories and one for the South Central Broadcasting Society in the Best Podcast or Short category. STUDENT ACCOLADES University Star columnist, Tafari Robertson was designated as a National Finalist in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence General Column Writing (Large School Division) category in May. National Mark of Excellence award judges could select one national winner and up to two national fnalists (runners-up) in each category. SCHOOL ACCOLADES Te School of Journalism and Mass Communication hosted 19 doctoral students and early career faculty from around the country in the PhDigital Bootcamp, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Te program, designed by Cindy Royal , prepares future faculty to lead innovative curriculum. Participants worked on 10 weeks of online modules, leading to a week at Texas State in May where they learned about digital product management coding techniques, 360 video, drones, social media, data visualization and more. [3] Dale Blasingame , Jon Zmikly , Daniel Carter and Kelly Kaufhold were also instructors in the program. Dr. Royal is working on #ADVISERAWARDS Laura Krantz , University Star Director and Faculty Adviser, will be recognized during the October CMA conference as a Distinguished Adviser for two-year newspapers. CMA annually recognizes various award programs, including Honor Roll Adviser Awards for professionals who have advised for fve or fewer years and Distinguished Adviser Awards for professionals who have advised for greater than fve years. Krantz received the Honor Roll Adviser Award for Two-Year Newspapers in 2010. Tis is a career award and recognizes her 10 years of service as adviser to the Tyler Junior College student newspaper. a research project based on the program’s activities. Te University Star is a College Media Association Pinnacle Awards Finalist for Best Breaking News Story for its coverage of the Sutherland Springs shooting. College Media Association (CMA) serves student media pros, stafs and programs with education, research and resources. CMA’s Pinnacle Awards honor the best college media organizations and individual work. Te contest is open to student work produced for any college media organization, including print, broadcast and online outlets, during an academic year. Winners will be announced during the National College Media Convention in October. Te University Star also received an Ingelhart First Amendment Grant to conduct a program called Soapbox Sound-Of in the Quad during Mass Comm Week 2018. Te CMA board voted in May to award Texas State University a grant to fully fund our proposal. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 13
