College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3 Laritza Garcia is exhibiting work in Not-So-Lone Star Studios: A Gathering of Texas Makers , curated by Kathleen Janvier and Natalie Macellaio. David Hefner had work in the Women &Teir Work’s Red Dot Show opening on September 13th in Austin. Te event featured over 150 works by some of the best contemporary artists in Texas. [2] Margo Handwerker’s essay “A Rural Case: Beyond Creative Placemaking” published by Routledge as part of an edited volume entitled Creative Placemaking: Research, Teory and Practice , eds. Cara Courage and Anita McKeown (release date: August 29, 2018). In July, Sean Justice took a group of fve students to Boston to present their work from their Families Learning Together project. Te Scratch World Conference is held at MIT every two years. Sean presented “Te Interface: Physical Computing with Young People.” N. Mendoza , K. Bocanegra , A. Esther , B. Kelley , and R.A. Lucas presented “Small Town Coding.” R.A. Lucas presented “Te Way It Works: Explore, Learn, Share, Repeat.” [3] From Here To Tere , a project by Mark Menjivar and Molly Sherman , opened at the UTSA Art Gallery in San Antonio this past June. Te project explored the diverse cultural, economic, and social activities found along Fredericksburg Road and the exhibition featured objects, archival materials, photographs, and oral histories that were selected and made in collaboration with community members. Mark Menjivar was included in the exhibition Monarchs: Brown and Native Contemporary Artists in the Path of the Butterfy , at the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, FL this summer. Mark led a Risograph zine making workshop focusing on archives and social justice at La Casa de El Hijo del Ahuizote in Mexico City this past June as part of the 2018 Digital Humanities Conference. Elvia Perrin’s “Bridge, Fossil + Unbound 2” prints were commissioned for the hospitality collection at JWMarriot in Nashville. DoubleTree in Lubbock commissioned her “Oculus” print for their hospitality collection. Purdue Galleries, West Lafayette, IN commissioned “Fossil” for their permanent collection. Elvia was the featured artist with works for purchase by Pottery Barn Retailer, New York. Tese works include “Fluid Strokes,” “Gray Shades,” “Evolve” and “Blue Pane.” “...Of Warp and Weft”, works by Caprice Pierucci and Charles Hepner was exhibited at the Davis Gallery and was Tribeza’s magazine’s June Art Pick. Te exhibition was also reviewed in Te Austin Chronicle on July 13, 2018, and was featured in Aether Art Magazine , “Entwined Beauty,” written by Christina Martell. Caprice Pierucci , Randall Reid , and David Hefner each had work in the Davis Gallery Group Show up until September 8th, 837 W. 12th in Austin. Soomin Remmler got the Best of Show award in the Colored Pencil Society of America’s 26th International Annual Exhibition 2018 Chicago. Claudia Roeschmann was invited to present with her cross disciplinary research team including faculty from Notre Dame and Northwestern University on the future of design thinking in higher education at the Design for America Summit at Northwestern in August. Claudia was also invited as one of four Texas State University representatives of the frst cohort of the Texas Academic Leadership Academy at Sam Houston State University in July, kicking of a year-long leadership academy for Texas’ aspiring academic leaders. In May, Jennifer Stob’s essay, “Archive Fervor” was published by the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth, New Zealand accompanying a program of artist Jodie Mack’s flms, entitled Glitch Envy: Experimental Films . In June, Jennifer spoke as an invited scholar at the Bullock Texas State History Museum’s screening of Jane B. par Agnes V. , part of their “Femme Film Fridays” flm series. In July, Jennifer’s chapter, “Te Cinétracts, Détournement and Social Space in Paris” appeared in the anthology, Architectures of Revolt: Te Cinematic City circa 1968 (ed. Mark Shiel, Temple University Press, 2018). ALUMNI ACCOLADES Gabi Martinez (aka Gabo Martini), Spring 2018 B.F.A. graduate, has work in the project room of Conduit Gallery in Dallas, which was on view until September 1. Jennifer Masely was accepted to the post-baccalaureate program in ceramic art at Kent State University. She is in Ohio and has begun working there in anticipation of submitting applications for M.F.A. programs next fall.
