JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES In a two-week span early this fall semester, senior lecturer Larry Carlson , had three articles published by CBS Sports' Longhorns 24/7 site. The latest piece addressed the link between JFK's famed "We choose to go to the moon" speech with the University of Texas-Rice University football series. Kennedy, at Rice Stadium in September 1962, noted that Americans chose to take on ambitious challenges, "not because they are easy but because they are hard." Carlson hosted UT's "Longhorn Locker Room Show" for KVET Radio in Austin some four decades ago, and co-hosted San Antonio ESPN Radio's "Longhorn Pipeline" program earlier this decade. Now in his 36th year of teaching at Texas State, he is a regular contributor to Longhorns 24/7. Kelly Kaufhold authored, “Mediating Empathy: The role of news consumption on mitigating attitudes about race and immigration,” which is now published in Newspaper Research Journal . Kelly authored, “Chapter 11: News and Information Industry,” which will appear in the forthcoming textbook, The Handbook of Media Management and Business . Kelly was one of four scholars invited to present on a panel about the economics of print journalism - “Why Are Newspapers Still Here?” - at the annual meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Toronto, Canada, August 8. [ 1 ] Debra Price and Kelly Kaufhold co-authored a study, “Bordering on Empathy: The effect of selective exposure and border residency on immigration attitudes,” which has been accepted for publication in the highly selective Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media . Kelly Kaufhold presenting “Why Are Newspapers Still Here?” in Toronto Cindy Royal presenting her research at the World Journalism Education Council in Paris Scholarship recipients Cristela Jones, Nicole Bautista, and Deandra Gonzalez 14 | September | College News 1 2 3 Cindy Royal's chapter "Gender and Technology: Women's Usage, Creation and Perspectives" was published in the book Gender and Pop Culture: A Text- Reader . She presented her research "Redefining Doctoral Education: Preparing Future Faculty To Lead Emerging Media Curriculum" based on the PhDigital Bootcamp project at the World Journalism Education Council in Paris in July. [ 2 ] STUDENT ACCOLADES Cristela Jones , Nicole Bautista , and Deandra Gonzalez recently received journalism scholarships at the 2019 21st Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala, presented by the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists. [ 3] Daniella Carrera, a Journalism major with a double minor in Latina/o Studies and Sociology, was selected for the iSchool Inclusion Summer Institute at the University of Pittsburgh this past summer. The month-long intensive now leads to a year-long research project with a student from the University of North Carolina and one from Bowie State University. During the fall, as part of the National Student Exchange Program, Daniella is taking courses at Queens College. The time in New York allowed her to connect with Polo Sandoval (2007), a CNN Correspondent and 2018 Young Alumni Rising Star Alumni Award recipient.
