Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University from 1976 to 2013, Morgenstern was chief editor of DownBeat Magazine from 1967 to 1973, and served as New York editor in 1964. (Article written by Jayme Blaschke.) Dr. Martin McCain completed a north Malaysia tour with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra as guest Principal Bass Trombone. McCain also performed a recital on a Crosstown Arts Concert Series and was on the faculty at the PRIZM Ensemble International Chamber Music Festival. Martin recently served on the jury for the International Trombone Association’s Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Solo Competition at the International Trombone Festival. [ 1 ] He performed on Rochester’s WXXI “Backstage Pass” live broadcast with the Gateways Music Festival Orchestra in Kodak Hall of the Eastman Teatre. Additionally, McCain has been added to the trombone artist roster for Boston’s S.E. Shires Company. Dr. Todd Oxford is celebrating many accomplishments this year. His activities include: • Winner of Contemporary Record Society Performing Artist Recording Grant • Winner of Global Music Award Silver Medal for live performance of “Desert Waves, Wilderness of Water” by Richard Hall • Recording of “Radiant Blues” by Charles Booker broadcast on Hawaii Public Radio • Adjudicator for University Interscholastic League • Published International Feature Interview with www.saxplaying.com STUDENT ACCOLADES Kolten Bippert won an audition this summer to perform on tour with the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps – Tempe, Arizona. [ 2 ] Erik Gamez was hired by San Antonio Independent School District to teach summer music camp and hired as a visual and music tech at O’Connor High School in Helotes. Peyton Grover is the recipient of the TMEA Outstanding College Music Educator Award, Bravo Award for Outstanding Senior in Instrumental Music Education, and Bravo Award for Outstanding Performance in Wind and Percussion Studies. He is now the Assistant Director of Bands at Bastrop High School. Chris Martinez was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society. He toured this summer as DrumMajor for Te Cadets – Allentown, Pennsylvania. ALUMNI ACCOLADES [ 3] Ramiro Cortez (BM ’18) is currently pursuing a masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music. Eliud Garcia (BM ’15) recently released his 2nd solo album entitled Versitos . Garcia is currently teaching in Austin in addition to having an active freelance career as a trombonist, drummer and vocalist. Camden Scarborough (BM ’17) recently received his masters degree from Northwestern University. Steven Vogel (BM ’15) was recently appointed to the faculty at Lone Star College – University Park where he will teach applied low brass and music appreciation. MOMA GORI MOMAK Dr. Dimitar Ninov's new cantata Moma Gori Momak (Maiden Burns a Bachelor) was selected among a number of other pieces deposited in the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR). It was recorded on May 2, 2019 by the BNR mixed choir and orchestra with Conductor of Orchestra Lubomir Denev, Jr. and Choir Master Lubomira Aleksandrova. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 17
