COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION SEPTEMBER ISSUE | FALL 2019 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Te fall semester kicks of with a record 5040 majors in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, aided by a university record freshmen class of more than 6,300. After record graduation last year (8900+), university enrollment is slightly down (38,230). Te College continues to celebrate milestones and exemplary achievement. As Music marks the Centennial of Bands, over 200 alumni returned to participate as the Bobcat Alumni Marching Band (pp.18-19). Art and Design faculty saw their work exhibited and presented across the globe (p..2-5), and the Texas State Galleries became the frst to present Philosophy of the Encounter in its entirety (pp.6-7). While Communication Studies faculty continue to churn out publications and win awards, Steve Beebe, again, discovered an unpublished, unknown work by C.S. Lewis (p.8-9). In dance, Brandon Gonzalez was featured in Vienna, while Ana Baer’s screendance works were presented in Spain, Brazil, Mexico, England, and Scotland (p.12-13). Te link between past and present is evident in the “Bobcat Connection” between journalism student Daniella Carrera and CNN Correspondent Polo Sandoval (p.15). In Music, Cynthia Gonzalez delivered two keynote addresses, Hank Hehmsoth was named a Jazz Research Fellow, Todd Oxford won a Global Music Award Silver Medal, and Dimitar Ninov’s work was recorded for the Bulgarian National Radio (pp.16-17). Teatre continued to win awards with Sarah Maines and Liz Fisher winning at the Austin Critics Table Awards, Johnny McAllister winning three awards at the Deauville American Film Festival in Paris, and Eugene Lee winning a Helen Hayes Award for Best Lead Actor in Washington D.C. (pp.20-21). Young alums Nick Eibler and Jorrel Javier made their Broadway debuts (p.23), while Isaac Byrne won an award in Hollywood and presented ground-breaking work in Canada (p.25). As this brief summary shows, it’s shaping up to be another exceptional year here at Texas State!
