Recent graduate John Vinzant (M.M. Music Composition) had his paper Sed Non Eodem Modo: Comparing Ludomusicology to Nineteenth-Century Musikwissenschaft accepted for presentation at two international video game conferences. Vinzant’s virtual presentation was on May 2nd at the first conference, Ludo 2020. The second conference, North American Conference on Video Game Music, took place virtually on June 13th and 14th. Following his first presentation, Vinzant was invited by Journal of Sound and Music in Games and Game Studies to submit his work for publication in their journals. #ALUMNISPOTLIGHT MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES Texas State School of Music Associate Professor of Practice Hank Hehmsoth released a commissioned production of “Basement Panorama,” a quarantine video, performed entirely remotely by John Mills Times Ten, the award winning ten-piece jazz group in Austin. [ 1 ] Hank is both video editor, and performing pianist in the video. “Basement Panorama” is a new composition by ex Texas State jazz faculty coordinator Dr. John Mills, and is released internationally by Fable Records. Hank says, “This entire recording was done remotely in band members individual homes with no rehearsals! Videos were done on iPhones and edited by me. This video is in honor of all our musician friends who, like us, are trying to figure out how to make music in their basements or home studios while we’re all feeling isolated.” Hehmsoth and Mills have worked together for fifty years, and shared in a live video broadcast interview by Scott Laningham on SLRadio Aug 27. [ 2 ] He says “Two longtime Austin music legends with 100 years on the scene between them. We premier a new music video from John Mills Times Ten and share other music and stories.” Dr. Todd Oxford was recently an applicant for the Center for International Studies, Verena and Kenneth J. Wilson Latin American Research Award. He also performed for the Association for Technology in Music Instruction National Online Conference, the College Music Society National Online Conference, and for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors National Online Conference. Lastly, he hosted Ellie Parker’s Webinar Presentation “I Am My Future” via the ZOOM platform. Dr. Nico Schüler recently published articles on “The Development of Computing Technology and Its Influence on Music-Analytical Methods and Encoding: 1940s through 1980s” and on “New Discoveries on African-American Composer Jacob J. He was a keynote speaker at the 13th Biennial International Conference on Music Theory and Analysis in Belgrade, Serbia, where he spoke about “Orientation Processes and Perspectivism in the Spatiality of Music-Theoretical Research: Reflections on the Plurality of Modern Methods and Methodology of Music Analysis.” Dr. Schüler also presented his research on “Online Research Methods for Rediscovering Forgotten Composers: Using Online Databases and Archives” at the international conference Music in the Disruptive Era: The Digital, the Internet and Beyond in Lucca, Italy, and on “The Humanistic Portrayal of Beethoven in the Two GDR Beethoven Films” at the College Music Society South Central Chapter. Dr. Schüler was invited to give a 3-day international workshop on computer-assisted music analysis in Europe, which resulted in several international conference presentations by workshop participants. He also published articles on composer Burkhard Meier, on Rastafarianism, on Hip Hop, and on Cantometrics in various peer- reviewed books. Graduate students supervised by Dr. Schüler gave eight presentations at regional and national conferences, one of whom received the 2020 Best Poster Presentation Award at the College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference. Fifteen of his undergraduate students presented conference posters. Last but not least, Dr. Schüler supervised five student papers that were subsequently published in refereed journals. STUDENT ACCOLADES The Epsilon Tau chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society at Texas State University has chosen 12 new inductees into their prestigious organization. Undergraduate students are Melanie Goldstein , Amy Gravell , Kaley McDonald , Payton McIntyre , William Phi , Caroline Reedy , Cole Spengler , and Sara Trogdon . Graduate students are Marissa Hernandez , Gregory Hilliard , Andrew LaRusch , and Joshua Torres . Their induction is a recognition of their academic excellence and outstanding musicianship. The Saxophone Studio of Dr. Todd Oxford has continued to stay busy accomplishing great things this summer. Recent accomplishments of the studio members include: Rachel Brown elected as vice president of membership for Theta Alpha Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Edgar Blandon , Elise Dickey , and Madison Douzat won auditions as saxophone section leaders for Bobcat Marching Band. Lauren Gordon is the inaugural winner of the Kyle Stoetzel Memorial Scholarship sponsored by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. [ 3] Nicole Soler elected as vice president of service for Theta Alpha Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Nicole won an audition for Drum Major of the Bobcat Marching Band. Studio members participated in two ZOOM platform studio recitals and in the ZOOM Webinar Presentation: “I Am My Future” by Ellie Parker.
