[ P G . 1 7 ] LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING While the COVID-19 pandemic persists, the College of Fine Arts and Communication remains resilient. While many events are virtual, the accolades earned are just as real as ever. Art and Design faculty had their work exhibited in Detroit, Miami, Houston, Corpus Christi, Austin, Durham, New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Seoul, South Korea. They presented at Princeton, lead a nationwide panel on the State of Black Design, and earned a National Science Foundation grant (pp. 2-4). In Communication Studies, Ann Burnette was named a Regents’ Teacher, Stephanie Dailey won an Early Career Award, Manusheela Pokharel a Dissertation Award, and Maureen Keeley published five articles. Faculty were also engaged internationally in India and London’s The Guardian (pp.6-7). In Dance, Christa Oliver won the Liberate Artists Forward Movement Educator Award, while Ana Baer’s work was screened in Greece, Pakistan, and Taiwan (p.8). In Journalism and Mass Communication, Amber Hinsley won the Grand Prize Award in the Great Ideas for Teaching Competition from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication; also, read about Advertising and Public Relations’ ongoing partnership with Hewlett Packard (p.10-11). In Music, Hank Hehmsoth partnered with John Mills Times Ten for some new jazz material, while Nico Schuler published multiple articles and (virtually) presented research in Serbia, Italy, and at a 3-day European workshop (pp.12-13). Theatre faculty had their work shown on Netflix (Emmy-nominated film), PBS, and HBO. They acted in the American Theatre Critics Association Francesca Primus Prize winning play, were interviewed in Forbes , were engaged internationally in Dubai and Australia, and were featured in Texas Monthly (pp. 14- 17). Also, congrats to alum Kym Klass, who recently won Advocate of the Year and Media of the Year awards for her work on mental health issues (p.11). As this summary shows, Bobcats are rising to the challenge of these challenging times.
