JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Dr. Nandini Bhalla published a co-authored paper titled “A two-path model of the impact of LGBTQ+ diversity CSR levels on public response” in Public Relations Review . She and her co-authors presented research titled “Science, Faith, and Information Sources as Drivers of Individuals' Perceptions of COVID-19 Risk and Mask-Wearing Intentions” at the annual International Communication Association (ICA) in Paris, France in May. At the Association for Educators in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) annual conference, Dr. Bhalla presented her co-authored research titled “Public Diplomacy and the Ukraine War: Analyzing U.S. and Indian News Stories of India’s Neutral Stand” and was a panelist in the panel titled “Covid-19 Pandemic Perspectives on Media, Technology and Culture in South Asia & Its Diaspora Worldwide.” She also chaired the research panel titled “Focusing on the Future Together: Media Research on South Asia” at the 105th annual conference of the AEJMC in Detroit in August. Dr. Ali Forbes was selected as a Kopenhaver Center Fellow at the 2022 Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Convention in Detroit, Michigan. Ali was chosen to take part in the pre-conference workshop Women Faculty Moving Forward: The Future is Female. The workshop offered an opportunity to foster new professional relationships and is intended to foster mentorship opportunities between the industry leaders of today and the industry leaders of tomorrow. Dr. Amber Hinsley and an interdisciplinary team of researchers had the research article "Examining the Theory of Motivated Information Management (TMIM) in the COVID-19 Pandemic" published in the Journal of Health Communication . The piece uses empirical research to expand the TMIM and identify pandemic- 12 | September | College News specific variables in the conceptualization of the theory. Hinsley's co-authors are Dr. Ilwoo Ju (Purdue), Dr. Taehwan Park (St. John's University) and Dr. Jennifer Ohs (Saint Louis University). Dr. Kelly Kaufhold presented research at the annual meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in Detroit. [1] Kaufhold and his co-author, Dr. Adeniyi Bello fromMcPherson University in Nigeria, presented Power to the People: Social Media as a Catalyst for Political Participation in Nigeria. The study looked at what communication behavior predicts whether young adults in Nigeria will vote. Dr. Prisca Ngondo , Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce , and Jennifer Scharlach received the Health Research Accelerator Award through the Translational Health Research Center at Texas State University in May. This award will allow them additional grant dollars to focus on their research dealing with the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy amongst Hispanic Texans. They were also invited to attend the Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon in June hosted by the Texas Association of Mexican American where they were also able to present their initial research summary to the TAMACC board of directors. [2] Working with TAMACC, the professors have been featured in several earned media opportunities such as being on the KUT’s Texas Standard syndicated radio program, the Latino Business Report Podcast, and mentioned in spots in the San Antonio Express News , KVUE and KSAT. Jennifer Scharlach and Debra Price received an exploratory travel grant from the Office of Distance Learning to travel to Seattle this past August to prepare a Study in America class for the fall 2023 semester. Scharlach and Price met with TXST alumni and individuals from organizations like Amazon [3] , Microsoft, Expedia, Pike’s Place Fish Market, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to prepare the curriculum for next year. The future course will allow students to explore career opportunities in Seattle and the West Coast in Public Relations and Advertising. STUDENT ACCOLADES The 2022 Public Relations Student of the Year, Alex Hartman , was selected as a Public Relations Student Society of America National Gold Key Award recipient. The PRSSA Gold Key Award is the highest individual honor given to PRSSA members and recognizes them for outstanding scholarship, public relations excellence, and chapter leadership. Alex was the Vice President of Membership Development for the 2021-22 academic year where she single-handedly planned and executed the chapter's 3-day spring semester Professional Development trip to Dallas. Her efforts resulted in 15 chapter members engaging with and visiting public relations professionals at the Perot Museum, the Dallas Zoo, Edelman and the Dallas Cowboys at their world headquarters. Alex is now the Digital Strategies Coordinator, Office of Communications and Community Engagement for the City of New Braunfels. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Jakob Rodriguez (2020) started at KSAT 12 as a digital producer, and then, via the TEGNA Producer-in-Residence program, moved to Corpus Christi where he produced the 10:00 news for KIII-TV. Now Jakob is back in San Antonio as a producer for KENS 5 TV. SCHOOL ACCOLADES KTSW 89.9 has 5 finalists in the College Broadcasters, Inc. National Student Production Awards!
