MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES A performance by Dr. Ian Davidson , Professor of Oboe, and Prof. Daris Word Hale , Senior Lecturer of Bassoon, at 2021 RioWinds Festival was recently reviewed in The Double Reed , the journal of the International Double Reed Society. Their performance included Davidson’s original composition "Ranch Songs." “Wow! This difficult program was warmly appreciated by the audience,” wrote the reviewer. Dr. Kyle R. Glaser , Associate Professor/Associate Director of Bands, was appointed director of the Austin Symphonic Band, beginning in September 2022. University Advancement has posted a Big Ideas TXST episode about Hank Hehmsoth , Associate Professor of Practice, superb musician, and jazz history researcher: “Episode 31: A life in music with Hank Hehmsoth . ” Flute professor Dr. Adah T. Jones was Principal Flute for the Victoria Bach Festival June 7-12, she also performed a flute and harp recital. Adah served on the National Flute Association Golden Anniversary Awards Committee and performed in the premier of “Images of Cherubim” by James Lee III (commissioned by the Awards Committee in celebration of the winners of the awards competition) at the NFA’s convention in Chicago. [1] She also served on the Frances Blaisdell Scholarship Committee, a panel of three judges to choose recipients of an annual award to deserving young flutists. Lynn Ledbetter was a presenter in an American String Teachers Association webinar, “The Many Facets of Studio Teaching: Exploring Key Areas for Success!” She also served as adjudicator for Katy ISD Young Artist Competition at Jordan High School in Fulshear, TX on May 7. She has also been reappointed chair, American String Teachers Association’s Studio Teacher Committee for 2022-2024 and elected president of Texas State University System’s Council of Faculty Senates. Scherer (bottom right) presenting two research presentations for the Conference of the International Society for Music Education 14 | September | College News 1 2 3 Dr. Martin McCain had a busy summer, beginning with performing in the conference big band at the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers May 11-14. He was invited to play several subscription concerts as guest bass trombonist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra throughout the 2021-22 season, and spent several weeks with the ensemble during the summer. June 7-8, he was a guest artist at the North Texas Trombone Camp and then traveled to Victoria to play in the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra June 9-11. A few days later, McCain traveled from coast to coast, first playing a recital in Avon Park, Florida for an enthusiastic audience of 500 on June 16th and then flew to California to perform at the Hollywood Bowl for a live Juneteenth CNN broadcast. [2] On June 22nd, he played the Austin leg of legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli’s world tour to a sold-out crowd at the Moody Center. He was also a headlining artist at the International Trombone Festival, where he presented a recital, performed with three faculty trombone choirs and was a panel discussion panelist. Dr. McCain performed at the Hollywood Bowl with the Re-Collective Orchestra for the live CNN broadcast Juneteenth: A Global Celebration of Freedom. The Re-Collective Orchestra is the first all- black orchestra to be invited to perform at the Hollywood Bowl in its 100-year history. The ensemble shared the stage with artists including Earth Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan and Bel Biv Devoe. Todd Oxford won the Global Music Award’s silver medal for Outstanding Achievement by an Instrumental Soloist, performing "Escapades" by John Williams. Dr. Alec D. Scherer recently presented two spoken research presentations at the 35th World Conference of the International Society for Music Education. [3] The research topics presented included undergraduate choral musicians’ conducting behaviors and their instructors’ pedagogy and perceptions of conductor attire. He recently published “Collegiate musicians’ experiences with democratic rehearsal procedures” in the International Journal of Music Education . The article examines student experiences with a contemporary rehearsal process that can be used to increase student agency, ownership, engagement, and growth as musicians and leaders. Published by the International Society for Music Education, the International Journal of Music Education is a quarterly academic journal covering music education, recognized as one of the premier journals in the music education field. Dr. Scherer also recently published “Effects of score study on undergraduate musicians’ performance ratings and rehearsal attitudes in chamber ensembles: An exploratory study” in Volume 22 of Research Perspectives in Music Education . In this article, Scherer and his co-author Dr. Brian A. Silvey (University of Missouri) examined chamber musicians’ experiences with rehearsals that included score study tasks. Although these tasks did not yield notable performance outcomes, participants generally enjoyed the tasks, suggesting that including score study tasks in other rehearsals may be a valuable means of increasing engagement/enjoyment without negatively impacting performance results. He also provided guest lectures on “Democratic Teaching Practices” and “Access to Quality Music Education” for two summer graduate programs. Scherer presented virtually on democratic teaching practices (one of his primary research areas) to master’s students at Capitol University in Ohio. The following week he presented “Opportunity to Learn Standards” and the Yale Symposium “Declaration on Equity in Music for City Students” to summer master’s music education students at Florida State University. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 15 Dr. Joey Martin , Director of Choral Activities, received the 2022 Choral Advocacy Award from the Texas Choral Directors Association. This award “honors conductors, educators, administrators, and other individuals who have been advocates for singing and ardent supporters of the choral arts within the community, school, or place of worship.” #SPOTLIGHT
