ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art 2 | September | College News FACULTY ACCOLADES Roger Colombik was featured in an article by Canvas Rebel magazine. [1] Margo Handwerker was awarded a 2022 Holt/ Smithson Foundation Research Fellowship. Margo is a curator/editor of M12 STUDIO, which recently received a $60,000 grant fromThe Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts to fund its project Tracing the Ogallala, a multi-year initiative that deepens human understanding of the Ogallala Geological Region and Aquifer. From June 14 – July 2, M12 STUDIO launched the Kansas Field Arts Forum, a three-week intensive place-based pilot program collaboratively designed by the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission and M12 STUDIO, with generous support from Pratt Community College, and others. Designed as an experiential learning opportunity for emerging practitioners, participants in this program visited numerous sites of social, ecological, and cultural significance across the High Plains and Tablelands of rural Kansas. The Kansas Field Arts Forum culminated with an exhibition and community art loop at the Vernon Filley Art Museum. Estéban Hinojosa has been named a juror for the City of Austin's Art in Public Places artist selection process. On June 15, Estéban led students from his Art History I class on a field trip to the Blanton Museum of Art to discuss ancient Greek ceramics and sculpture. [2] He also led students from his Art History II class on a field trip to the Blanton Museum of Art to discuss Renaissance and Early Modern painting. Dr. Kevin Jenkins (he/him) has been appointed to the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee of the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA). Bethany Johnson completed a residency with Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Center for Coastal Studies in July. This residency will be followed by two associated Professor, Roger Colombik Estéban Hinojosa with Art History I students on a field trip to the Blanton Museum Study abroad program in Florence, Italy led by Dr. Andrew Chen and Jules Buck Jones 1 2 3 exhibitions in Corpus Christi in early 2023. Bethany's work was included in the exhibition Texas Artists: Women of Abstraction at the Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi this past spring. This exhibition will be moving to the Art Museum of Southeast Texas in October. Brian Johnson had a print in the 2022 Extreme Pressure Biennial of American Prints exhibition at the College of Central Florida's Webber Gallery in Ocala, FL. The exhibit ran through September. Brian had a print in the 3rd Coast Biennial National Juried Exhibition in the K Space Contemporary's Starr Gallery, in Corpus Christi. The show was juried by Mark L. Smith Ph.D., co- founder of Flatbed Press and former Art Dept chair and Associate Dean at UT Austin. The show ran from July until the end of August. He was invited to be one of seven artists to participate in Quotations from Daily Life: 2022 Studio Art Faculty Exhibition . Six of Brian's prints and drawings will be shown at The Art Galleries (TAG) in Austin beginning the first week of classes until the end of October. At the core of the exhibit are artists who "take inspiration from the seemingly mundane aspects of life, creating works that help us contemplate our shared experiences and give us new ways to discuss how we understand the world we live in." MiHyun Kim and her research team received the NSF DISES – Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental System grant ($1.5 million). The project focuses on Environmental Justice for Urban Forest and will run for the next five years. MiHyun and her M.F.A. students, Jennifer Seward , Chenyao Zhu , Tyler Rico , and Katherine Pena presented their work at Evolving Graphic Design Symposium at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, June 22 – 24. The title of the talk was "Generative Design: Code as a Creative Medium" and it was within Evolving Creative Coding session. She was invited to exhibit her new project, "Fragmented: Exploration of Indirect Translation" at Evolving Graphic Design Exhibition , May 24 – June 24 at Art Loft Gallery and Backspace Gallery, University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a member of the State Board of Review, Jeffrey Lieber participated in the Texas Historical Commission's quarterly meeting, which was held in San Antonio on May 20 – 21. During May – June, Jessica Mallios was invited by the Darmstädter Sezession to participate in the artist residency program Atelier Siegele in Darmstadt, Germany. Randall Reid participated in two exhibitions during the summer. The first one was a large group at William Campbell Contemporary Gallery, Ft. Worth, TX from May 21 – August 27. The second one was also a large group at Davis Gallery, Austin from June 11 – July 23. Soomin Remmler was in the group exhibition, Lime in de Coconut , at Conduit Gallery in Dallas through August 27. She is also in the group exhibition, Drawn in San Antonio Today at McNay Museum of Art in San Antonio and the show is extended through November 18th. Soomin is chosen as an inaugural artist for the newly launched program called the Studio at McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. As a lead artist, Soomin curated the Museum’s collection for an exhibition, exhibiting her drawings, poems, and dioramas. The residency runs until the last day of 2022. She taught 2 workshops at McNay as a part of the program for the staff members and have 3 more workshops scheduled for the public. The studio and Soomin are featured on KAST , San Antonio Culture Map, Visit San Antonio, and Art Daily . STUDENT ACCOLADES Five of Brian Johnson’s students had prints accepted into Flatbed Press's Edition Variables 2022: New Austin Printmakers exhibition. Students Kate Balmos , Michelle DuPont , Joseph Maxfield , Esmeralda Quimbar , and Dani Sepulveda were responsible for archivally framing their works on paper with guidance from instructor Brian Johnson . SCHOOL ACCOLADES Alaina Archer received the Dr. Lawrence Estaville Employee Excellence Award for 2022. Fifteen students from Texas State spent four weeks in Florence, Italy this July taking an art history class with Dr. Andrew Chen (Assistant Professor of Art History) and a drawing class with Jules Buck Jones (Lecturer in the School of Art and Design).
