The collector’s magazine Scary Movie: Behind-the-Screams documents the making of the Austin horror film with a film score by Hehmsoth composed for director Daniel Erickson over thirty years ago. Adah Jones was chosen to organize and host the Lifetime Achievement Award event at the National Flute Association Convention in August for recipient, Patricia George who was Dr. Jones’s high school flute teacher. The event highlighted music by Ms. George’s composer husband Thom Ritter George with performances by former students, colleagues, and friends. [4] Daveda Karanas recently joined the Recording Academy as a professional voting member. She now has a pivotal role in shaping the future of the music industry by participating in the selection process for Grammy Awards, contributing to the recognition of outstanding artists and their contributions to the art of music. Her unique perspective and unwavering commitment to musical excellence will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the Academy’s decision-making process. Her passion, expertise, and commitment to diversity make her a valuable addition to the Recording Academy, and her influence will undoubtedly be felt for years to come. Daveda Karanas will appear as Liese in the final run of Sir David Pountney’s acclaimed production of The Passenger at the prestigious Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain. This captivating achievement will mark a significant milestone in her illustrious career, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to the world of opera. The Passenger , composed by Mieczysław Weinberg, is a haunting and deeply emotional opera that delves into the complex themes of guilt, redemption, and reconciliation. Set against the backdrop of post-World War II Europe, the opera tells the powerful story of a former Auschwitz prison guard, Liese (Karanas), who encounters one of her former inmates, Marta, aboard an ocean liner. Kevin Mooney ’s book Texas Jazz Singer: Louise Tobin in the Golden Age of Swing and Beyond received a complimentary review by Luke Riedlinger in Spring/ Summer 2023 issue of Jazz & Culture . On July 19, Dr. Mooney gave an invited 90-minute presentation on Louise Tobin and his book Texas Jazz Singer in Denton at the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum as part of their Texas Talks writers series.
