Kevin Jenkins was elected to the editorial review board for the academic journal, Art Education . Bethany Johnson 's solo exhibition of sculptures and drawings, Log Book , opens at Moody Gallery in Houston on September 16th. An artist talk will accompany the opening reception. This exhibition is Johnson's fifth solo exhibition at the gallery. Jules Buck Jones is curating shows at a new gallery in Wimberley called ARTSPACE with the local non-profit projectART. The inaugural show will include three Texas State faculty members, Lana Waldrep Appl , Joey Fauerso , and Michael Villarreal . The show opens September 30th and runs through November 12th. [2] Alice J. Lee presented her research on the Korean alphabet at the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) conference in June. HASTAC is an interdisciplinary network formed in 2002-03. Alice’s presentation was titled, “The Korean Alphabet — a Design Case Study of Critical Making and Social Justice.” She presented her research, “QWERTY, History of the Korean Typewriter, and Cultural Inclusivity in Technology” at TypeCon in August. TypeCon is an international conference focused on typography. Alice has been elected as a board officer for the Society of Typographic Aficionados, an international professional organization. She has been invited to a design residency with DesignInquiry in London during London Design Week. Grounded by Annie May Johnston, Annie Miller , and Lauren Moya Ford was featured in "Top Five: August 3, 2023," Glasstire . Jacqueline Saragoza McGilvray currently has a solo exhibition at Sala Diaz and was recently selected as fellow for AAMC Propel Program which begins in November. [3] Mark Menjívar received a 2023 artist grant in support of his project La Misma Canción (The Same Song) from Community Engagement, a California based organization that supports artists who reimagine our shared spaces and stimulate social engagement, creative expression and collective empowerment. Beverly Penn 's work is included in the exhibition Two Suggestions which pairs 5 US artists with 5 Korean artists at the Bongsan Cultural Arts Center, Daegu. Borderland Collective will have a Houston book launch party at Basket Books for their monograph, Otherwise, It Would Be Just Another River: Ten Years of Borderland Collective's Practice in Collaboration and Dialogue . The book was edited by Jason Reed and Molly Sherman, designed by Molly, and includes work and essays by Mark Menjivar , Erina Duganne , and Adetty Pérez de Miles. [4] Jason Reed 's book Field Work was included as part of the Basket Books table at Printed Matter's LA Art Book Fair in August. Reed was awarded at Portal to Texas History Fellowship to work on a book about oil and gas extraction in West Texas. Atascosa Borderlands , an exhibition by Luke Swenson and Jack Dash , is now open at the Center for the Study of the Southwest in Brazos Hall (invited by Jason Reed as part of his Jones Professorship). Luke and Jack will be visiting for talks on October 11 at the Wittliff and October 12 at the CSSW. Soomin Remmler had a month-long private artist residency in July 2023 in Zermatt, Switzerland sponsored by a CEO of Screening Eagle Technologies. Two of her drawings were acquired by Screening Eagle Tech this month. Molly Sherman and Jason Reed were awarded AIGA's prestigious 50 Books | 50 Covers of 2022 for the book Otherwise, It Would Be Just Another River (2022, Spector Books). Contributors to the book include Jason Reed , Molly Sherman , Adetty Pérez de Miles , and Mark Menjivar . The book is now part of the AIGA Collection at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University’s Butler Library, a collection of design history dating back to 1923.
