14 | September | College News MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES In spring 2025, Daris Hale was invited to present at the Northeast Chapter of the Society for Ethnomusicology, the Musicological Society Scientific Conference of the Republic of Serbia, and the Society for Ethnomusicology Southern Planes Chapter Annual Conference, about her contributions and work at the Cultural Arts Center in Tanzania, where she serves as a conceptual leader in the creative design and collaborative efforts that led to an active ethnomusicological practice and the strategic use of tourism to support long-term sustainability. • In June, Hale was honored with an invitation to speak at the African Music Center at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her presentation focused on her contributions and work at the cultural arts center in Tanzania. The African Music Center at Gutenberg University in Mainz engages with both the anthropology department and the school of music at their institution. [1] Ian Davidson performed as Principal Oboe of the Blue Lake Festival Band, conducted by Kevin Geraldi (Univer- sity of Illinois) and Blue Lake Festival Orchestra, con- ducted by Raphael Jimenez (Oberlin College), at the Blue Lake Summer Music Festival in Twin Lake, Michigan. Both performances were broadcast live by NPR affiliate, Blue Lake Public Radio, reaching audiences across the upper Midwest, from Detroit to Chicago. • Davidson also performed as Solo English Horn at the Bear Valley Music Festival in Bear Valley, California. Each year professors and professionals from universi- ties and orchestras around the country come together for the two-week festival that boasts eight different full-length orchestra programs in ten days--a feat not matched at any other festival in the US. Hank Hehmsoth has published a major feature article with All About Jazz , one of the world’s leading jazz pub- lications. Titled “Unearthed & Unforgettable: The Lost Tapes of Just Jazz,” the article uncovers rare 1970 tele- vision footage of historic jazz performances thought lost for over 50 years. These rediscovered recordings feature legendary artists such as Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, Don Byas, Billy Eckstine, and Erroll Garner, offering intimate and irreplaceable glimpses into jazz history.
