FACULTY ACCOLADES Jasmine Austin received the 2024 Distinguished Edited Book Award from the Applied Communication Division of the National Communication Association. The book is entitled, Communication and Organizational Changemaking for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: A Case Studies Approach , and centers on case studies that demonstrate how changemaking efforts can be reimagined and implemented in better, more nuanced, and more sustainable ways to produce meaningful organizational change. [1] Ann Burnette and Wayne Kraemer published "The 2022 national security strategy: Responding to new threats in an evolving world" in the Proceedings of the Tenth Conference for the International Society for the Study of Argumentation (ISSA). The essay is based on a presentation that Dr. Burnette and Mr. Kraemer delivered to ISSA in Leiden, the Netherlands, in July 2023. Stephanie Dailey was invited to visit the Department of Communication at Baylor University to share her research with their graduate students. It was a fulfilling day of academic connection and camaraderie. The Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research in Organizational Communication , in which Stephanie co-authored a chapter, will receive the 2024 Outstanding Edited Book Award from the Organizational Communication Division of the National Communication Association. [2] Rebekah Fox and Ann Burnette were respondents on the State of Higher Education and Rhetoric in Texas panel at the Public Address Conference 2024 held at the University of Texas, Austin. They presented "Free Speech Cases in Texas Education: Situations and Strategies". [3] Marek Muller’s recent publication, “Long live the Liver King: Right-wing carnivorism and the digital dissemination of primal rhetoric,” was featured in an article in Teen Vogue . 1 2 3 6 | September | College News COMMUNICATION STUDIES Communication Studies, Health Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Leadership Studies, Organizational Communication, Persuasive Communication, Political Communication, & Teacher Certif ication in Communication Studies DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES TEDx is coming… The Department of Communication Studies’ TEDxTexasStateUniversity team will host the 9th annual TEDx event on Saturday, February 22, 2025. This year’s theme is “Legacy.” As seen below, on November 8, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson, alumnus of Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State College), signed into law the Higher Education Act of 1965 on our campus in San Marcos, Texas. One of the primary aims of the legislation was "to strengthen the educational resources of our colleges and universities.” With this in mind, the 2025 TEDx theme will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the signing of this bill and its lasting legacy. Featured speakers will explore the legislation’s impact on higher education, the limitless possibilities within education, and the promising future of education. Communication Studies partners with Bobcat Bounty Bobcat Bounty is an on-campus food pantry at Texas State University sponsored by the TXST Nutrition & Foods Program. The goal is to decrease food insecurity by providing healthy foods to the students, faculty, and community members at Texas State University. This fall the Communication Studies Department in collaboration with Bobcat Bounty, set up a cupboard that provides canned goods, pasta, rice and snacks. The cupboard location is in Centennial Hall (205). This location makes it easy for students to have access to food 24/7. All those in need of food can help themselves to any item at no cost. The cupboard is restocked every Tuesday afternoon. Students from the Career Readiness Course, directed by Dr. Nikkie Saldivar Hodgson , will conduct a food drive in November. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 7 FACULTY ACCOLADES Ann Burnette delivered a talk on the arguments used by woman suffrage leaders at the program “Selling Suffrage: Words and Symbols to Win the Vote and the ERA.” The occasion was a fundraising event for the Turning Point Suffrage Memorial Association, which is raising money for a national memorial to commemorate the movement that secured women’s right to vote. She was also interviewed as an expert on presidential communication by the Washington Post for a piece entitled, “From ‘my generals’ to ‘my Kevin,’ Trump's preferred possessive can be a sign of affection or control.” Michael Burns was the keynote speaker at The Ohio State University's Academic Leadership Forum. [ 1 ] He guided the provost and every vice president, dean, and chair/director at Ohio State through a workshop focused on best practices for conducting interdisciplinary research. This workshop was based off of the CoSearch program he developed with Marian Houser. Manusheela Pokharel [ 2 ] published “Cancer information overload: Discriminant validity and relationship to sun safe behaviors,” in Patient Education and Counseling . Her article, “Health communication roles in Latino, Pacific Islander, and Caucasian Families: A qualitative investigation” was recently published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling . STUDENT ACCOLADES M.A. students Sean Dyhre , Jorlanditha Austin , and Noah Dawson travelled with Dr. Stephanie Dailey to the Organizational Communication Mini Conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
